의식 연구에서 질적 접근법의 意義 = The Significance of Qualitative Research in Consciousness Studies

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문에서 필자는 의식 현상의 본질을 규명하고자 하는 과학적?철학적 탐구에서 이른바 질적 접근법이 갖는 난점과 의의를 밝힌다. 의식 연구에서 질적 접근법은 (i) 형이상학적 이원론의 위험에 쉽게 개입될 수 있고, 나아가 (ii) 그 결과물의 이론적 체계성과 완결성을 확보하는 데에 어려움을 가질 수 있다. 그럼에도 그 접근법은 ‘어떤 특정한 의식 체험의 전체 양상이 갖는 구체적이고 미세한 의미’를 적실하게 파악할 수 있다. 왜냐하면 의식에 대한 다른 양적 연구법과 달리 질적 접근법은 의식 체험의 세부적인 의미의 근거가 되는 그 체험의 심층적인 내적 지평과 외적 지평을 여러 방법을 통하여 규명할 수 있기 때문이다. 여기서 의식 체험의 내적 지평을 규명하는 것은 인지 주체의 내면적인 배경과 역사를 밝혀내는 일이며, 그 외적 지평을 해명하는 것은 인지 주체가 속해 있는 특정한 물리적?생물학적?사회-문화적 환경의 중층 구조를 파악하는 것이다. 본 논의는 적어도 의식 연구와 관련하여 질적 연구와 철학 사이의 가교를 놓고 더 나아가 의식에 대한 다학제적 탐구의 이념과 방향을 설정하는데에 기여하고자 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In this paper the author uncovers the significance of qualitative approach in the scientific and philosophical investigations into the
nature of conscious phenomena. In consciousness studies, qualitative approach can easily be committed to the danger of metaphysical dualism, and have some difficulty in securing the theoretical systematicity and completeness of its results. Nonetheless the approach can properly grasp the concrete, specific meanings of the whole aspects of a particular conscious experience. Because, unlike other quantitative approaches to consciousness, it can, by means of adopting various qualitative techniques, specify the deep internal
and external horizons of a conscious experience which are considered to be the basis of finely grained meanings of such experience. Here the exposition of the internal horizon of a conscious experience means laying bare the inner background and history of a cognitive subject, whereas that of the external horizon of such experience indicates the recognitions of the multi-layered strata of the particular physical, biological, socio-cultual environments to which that subject belongs. This inquiry is intended to build a bridge between qualitative research and philosophy regarding consciousness studies, and attempts to make a contribution to highlighting the idea and direction of the multi-disciplinary research on consciousness.
