국립중정기념당원구와 기념의 정치: 장개석 기념과 영원불멸성의 서사 = National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall Park and Politics of Commemoration: Commemorating Chiang and Narratives of Immortality

National Chiang Kai-shek(CKs) Memorial Hall Park, which is one of the landmark and tourist attraction of Taiwan, is a public space in memory of the late president Chiang Kai-shek. While this place had been transformed from a place for personality cult to one of political contestation and struggle over collective memory, CKS Memorial Hall still constitutes an important part of Taiwan’s collective memory. This study examines how CKS is remembered in CKS Memorial Hall with a particular attention to the ways in which those who established a public space in memory of an individual counterbalanced against risks involved in commemorating a mortal and deficient being by adding narratives of immortality in commemoration. This study shows that in CKS Memorial Hall, it is made difficult for CKS to be de-commemorated by linking commemorating him with three unalterable narratives—traditional thoughts of piety and loyalty, the Republic of China, and Chinese culture—and by guarding him and his legacy with the aura of immortality from political contestation. In this regard, CKS Memorial Hall, which has been transformed from a memory space of personality cult to a mundane space for the general public, is in fact an already politicized space of cultural politics.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

간이다. 개인숭배의 공간이었던 중정기념당원구는 민주화 이후 정치적 경합, 기억투쟁의 공간으로 변모하였지만, 대만의 집단기억에서 여전히 중요한 자리를 차지한다. 본 연구는 유한하고 흠결 많은 개인을 기억하고 기념하는 데 내재한 위험을 상쇄하기 위해 기념공간 건립 주체가 영원불멸성의 서사를 부여한다는 점에 착목하여, 중정기념당원구에서 장개석이 기념되는 방식을 살펴본다. 중정 기념당원구에서 장개석 기념은 세 가지 서사, 즉 충효의 전통사상, 중화민국, 중화문화와 연계되어 기념공간에서 장개석을 탈기념하는 것이 어렵게 되고, 인간적 한계를 초월하는 불멸의 아우라가 그에게 덧씌워짐으로써 현실정치적 논쟁으로부터 장개석과 그의 유산이 보호된다. 이러한 의미에서 개인숭배의 공간에서 일상의 공간으로 변모한 중정기념당원구는 일상화된 문화정치의 공간인 것이다.
