자기 형성의 무대: 왕립거래소의 폰스와 스트랜드의 거래소들 = The Stage for Self-fashioning: The Pawns of the Royal Exchange and the Exchanges in Strand

국문 초록 (Abstract)

폰스(pawns)는 16세기 후반 무역 거래를 위해 건립된 런던 왕립거래소(The Royal Exchange) 내부에 자리했던 사치품 소비 공간이다. 폰스는 거리 또는 통로에서 유래하는 이름대로 복도와 같은 상점길이 반복적으로 이어지는 구조였다. 실내 공간으로서 폰스가 가진 폐쇄적 성격은 사치품 소비를 통해 자신들을 차별화했던 왕족과 귀족, 그리고 17세기 초부터 런던에 급증한 신흥 부유층을 주요 소비층으로 아우를 수 있는 장점으로 작용하였다. 폰스에서 이뤄진 사치품 소비는 사회지배층(social elite)으로서의 정체성을 드러내고 확인받기 위한 사교 활동(sociality)에 가까웠다. 이 글은 그동안 1차 사료의 부재로 한계에 부딪혔던 폰스의 공간적 특수성을 규명하고자 하는 시도이다. 『런던의 논서치(London’s Nonsuch)』(1668)에서 찾은 평면도와 사무엘 핍스(Samuel Pepys, 1633-1703)의 생생한 기록을 실마리로 사용자의 공간적 경험을 재구성함으로써 폰스가 근대 초 런던에 소개한 새로운 유형의 소비문화가 지배층의 사회관계망까지 포함하는 것이었음을 밝힌다. 폰스는 사회적 정체성이 만들어지고 알려지고 보호되는 공간이었을 뿐 아니라, 변화하는 신사 계층의 이상이 소개되고, 구현되었던 무대였다.

The pawns refers to the luxury shopping area of the Royal Exchange, an institution established for the purpose of commerce and trading in late sixteenth-century London. As its name is deemed to mean a passageway or a corridor, the pawns was structured by the endless rows of the shops. The enclosed nature of the pawns drew not only royalty and nobility, but also the new urban gentry, who rapidly increased in London from the early seventeenth century. The shopping practice at the pawns was a new form of sociality that was instrumental in the self-fashioning of social elites. This paper seeks to understand the spatial specificity of the pawns. By examining the floor plan of the space from London’s Nonsuch (1668) and the Diary of Samuel Pepys (1633-1703), it argues that the pawns was not only a stage where external markers of an elite identity were accepted, admired, acknowledged, and protected, but also where the changing notion of the gentlemanly ideal was introduced and practiced.
