      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This article aims to study the rejection of nationalization and orientation toward the outside of the state in St. John”s Poetic Collection written by Jang, Young-Hak. In the work, Jang tries to betray that South and North Koreans were “nationalized” during the Korean war through the subordination of people by horror of war. The state has conducted war not to protect its people, but to capture and subjugate them. That”s why Jang regards entire South Korea as another POW camp. In the work, POW camp on Geoje island is represented not merely as an exceptional space for keeping prisoners of war, but rather a kind of an arrangement that reveals the general function of modern states which is capturing and subjugating of people through war. As long as modern states exist and war keeps on, there cannot be a way for entire people to avoid prisoners of war. With the realization, in St. John”s Poetic Collection, the protagonist Nuhye committed a suicide on the fence of the barbed wire entanglement in the concentration camp. After the death, Dong-ho detected the possibility that the outside of the state, the exterior of the camp potentially can exist. However, Dong-ho, regrettably, wouldn”t take specific actions to go beyond the territory of nation. Nevertheless, it can be identified that Jang aims to extricates literary orientation in his work from the framework of nation/state distinction, one of the modern institutional dimensions.
