자기존중감(self-esteem) 이론에 대한 목회상담학적 고찰 = A critical review of the self-esteem theories: a pastoral perspective

국문 초록 (Abstract)

인본주의 심리학에서 태동한 자기존중감과 관련된 이론들은 이제 기독교 상담학계에서도 친숙한 용어가 되어가고 있다. 잘 알려 진대로, 로저스를 비롯한 많은 인본주의 심리학자들은 인간의 심리적 장애와 부적응의 문제가 바로 낮은 자기존중감 으로부터 말미암는다고 굳게 믿는다. 특히, 기독교계의 자기존중감 신학의 추종자들은 자기사랑, 자기가치, 자조, 긍정적인 자아상등의 인본주의 심리학적 개념을 신학적 용어로 바꾸어 설명하려고 한다. 그들은 인본주의 심리학자들과 유사하게 인간의 존엄성, 가치, 자율성 등을 고취함을 통해 여러 가지 심리적 부적응의 문제가 해결 될 뿐 아니라, 인간의 성공과 행복이 달성 될 수 있다고 주장한다. 또한, 그들은 자신들의 인본주의적 관점을 통해 중요한 신학적 교리인 창조와 구속, 그리고 인간론과 구원론 등을 전개시킨다. 그 결과, 복음의 의미는 인간의 존엄성과 가치를 드러내고 그들 자신의 행복과 성공을 추구하는 하나의 수단으로 심하게 왜곡된다. 따라서, 자기존중감 신학의 다양한 입장과 이론들은 전혀 성경적 지지기반을 가지지 못한다. 이에 반해 성경에 대한 개혁주의적 해석에 입각한 성경적인 자아상은 인간의 죄의 실재를 인정하지만, 그렇다고 해서 어둡고 비관적이고 열등감과 죄책감으로 가득찬 부정적인 자아상은 아니다. 성경적인 자아상은 인간의 가치보다는 하나님의 은혜와 능력을 강조하며 드러내고자 한다. 성경적인 자아상은 자신의 성공이나 행복을 추구하기 보다는 자신의 문제에서 벗어나 하나님의 영광과 타인의 유익을 먼저 구하는 진정한 의미에서의 긍정적이고 건강한 자아상을 추구한다. 성경적인 자아상은 자신의 죄의 실재를 인정하면서도, 오직 하나님의 은혜에 기초하여 하나님만을 의지함으로 하나님 나라의 새로운 피조물로서 끊임없이 새로워져가고 있는 자신의 모습을 감사함으로 바라보며 느끼는 것을 지향한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

A term self-esteem which is deeply rooted in the humanistic psychology has become an acquainted term in the field of Christian counseling. As it was revealed, many humanistic psychologists such as Rogers and Maslow believed that many problems of human psychological disorders and maladaptation were originated from the low self-esteem. In particular, the proponents of the theology of self-esteem within the Christianity attempt to establish major theological doctrines by adapting the psychological concepts of self-love, self-worth, self-help and positive self-image. Like many humanistic psychologists, they insist that by instilling human dignity, worth and autonomy, human psychological problems can be solved and their success and happiness would be surely achieved. Furthermore, they try to establish the doctrines of creation and redemption through the perspective of humanistic psychology. As a result, they distort the meaning of Gospel as a mere tool for human sucess and happiness. Accordingly, we can say that the position of the theology of self-esteem do not have any biblical support. On the other hand, though the biblical self-image based on the interpretation of a reformed perspective for the word of God acknowledges the reality of human sin, nevertheless, it is not a dark, pessimistic and negative self-image that is full of the feeling of inferiority and false guilt. It intends to reveal and emphasize the grace and power of God rather than the value and worth of human beings. The biblical self-image of a Christian represents a true healthy and positive self-image that pursuits first the glory of God and the benefit of others by seeing themselves as a new creation in the kingdom of God on the basis of relying on God in the grace of God.
