공(共)지시(Co-reference) 표현의 번역 방법 연구 = Translation of Co-reference Items in consideration of different cohesive devices

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Halliday and Hasan said the overt cohesive relationships between parts of the texts are necessarily linked to a language s grammatical system. Accordingly, given the different features of grammar between Korean and English, cohesive devices in the target language ought to be employed in the process of translation to mark cohesion in the source text. In consideration of the inevitable shift, this paper aims to emphasize a need for explicit translation when transferring the interrelated systems of co-reference into the source language.
In English texts, new lexical items are used in the co-reference chain referring to the same antecedent. The lexical variation derives its character from the well-known features of the antecedent, which is mainly culture-bound. Thus, relevant relations between the concepts can not be established for the TT readers who lack background subject knowledge and hardly recognize the grammatical system of the ST co-reference chain.
That being the case, translators have to pay particular attention to the set of co-reference items in order to produce cohesion in TT as clearly as in ST. This paper suggests that the goal could be achieved by repeating an antecedent when translating co-reference elements from English texts into Korean.
