Amphiphilic block copolymers of methacrylates were prepared, each of which consists of a hydrophilic segment with acid group and a hydrophobic poly(alkyl methacrylate) segment. Their precursors were obtained by the sequential living group transfer polymerization of an alkyl methacrylate and tert―butyl methacrylate, where the segment molecular weights and compositions could be controlled by regulating the feed ratio of two monomers. Tert-butyl ester group was selectively hydrolyzed to give acid group containing segment. ABA triblock copolymers obtained by a bifunctional initiator were chracterized by narrow molecular weight distributions while the yields were almost quantitative.
