In this paper, the relationship between individuals and society is explored, focusing on Rawls’ philosophical theory. The contents discussed in this paper are as follows. First, Rawls’ awareness of the problem about the relationship between individuals and society was examined. Second, as a conception of society pursued by Rawls, the concept of ‘well-ordered society’ and its related ‘overlapping consensus’ and ‘public reason’ was examined. Third, as a conception of person premised by Rawls, we explored human beings who are free and equal, humans with autonomy and self-respect, and humans as moral person. Fourth, Rawls’s views on the relationship between individuals and society were examined, and some problems that may arise in the relationship between individuals and society were discussed. Lastly, we extracted implications of citizenship education that can be suggested from Rawls’ philosophical theory as mentioned above.
