Economic abuse is a subcategory of domestic violence that has not received sufficient attention from both researchers and policy makers in South Korea. By reviewing existing literature on economic abuse produced in the U.S., this study aims to provide a path for future research and policy development in South Korea on this important issue. Based on the recent literature on economic abuse, the study introduces the concept of economic abuse, measuring tools for economic abuse, as well as the current research trend and studies on policy and programs to address economic abuse. The study makes the following recommendations for conducting research on economic abuse and developing economic empowerment and anti-poverty policies and programs for domestic violence victims in South Korea: (1) grounding the concept of economic abuse in the South Korean context to develop a measuring tool that accurately captures the South Korean experience of economic abuse and (2) bringing into light the experience of economic abuse in distinctively Korean social and cultural contexts related to gender and class differences to develop concrete and effective policies and programs. Lastly, the study highlights the essential role of social work professionals in developing economic empowerment policies and programs for victims of domestic violence.
