This study began with the purpose of inducing active participation in singing
activities from students to graduate from the conventional cramming singing
education. Singing education has so far been teacher-centric in most cases. It is
required to have the students develop an attitude of active participation and give
student-centric lessons in order to help them cultivate their musical potential and
creativity.
Since the Seventh Curriculum highlights "musical activities," it is important to focus on activities around music itself in singing lessons rather than on the understanding of musical concepts and elements. The old fixed singing lessons should change to new instructional directions in order to inspire the students to participate the repetitive singing activities with no boredom.
The specific research methods were as follows:
First, the meanings and importance of singing activities were examined in music education.
Second, the singing and instrumental music parts were compared and analyzed in terms of percentage in order to review the relative importance of the singing area of the activities areas in the music textbooks in the current Seventh Curriculum.
Third, two unison songs were chosen, and diverse singing instruction methods were proposed.
And finally, specific lesson plans were developed for the unison song.
The previous studies mostly adopted multimedia, utilized the recorder and Danso, or proposed various piano accompaniment methods to increase the effects of singing education. Thus the study proposed new singing lesson plans that were not addressed in the previous studies. Those lesson plans will be great means to induce concern and interest among the students that have difficulty with Korean traditional music singing activities when being applied to Korean traditional singing music. The study also proposed diverse singing and instrumental music activities for effective singing lessons. If broader creative activities are properly incorporated such as making lyrics in singing activities and doing impromptu play in instrumental music activities, they will generate different effects, as well.
