As Information Communication Technology develops, digital media have been actively used as tools of information transmission and communication in overall culture, economy, and daily life. Moreover, they have become new expressive tools as they expanded to the field of art. In modern art, various genre has appeared that took advantages of digital media such as photo, graphic, and image. Similary, digital printmaking appeared as making use of digital media as the plate in printmaking.
Digital printmaking is printmaking that makes use of digital printing techniques and depending on the purpose of the artist it is made with the course of compiling and printing image through computer programs. Digital printmaking satisfies pluralism, indirectness and uniqueness that are basic attributes of traditional printmaking in the point of utilizing digital media. In addition, it came to have the original attributes of digital image such as full replication, immediate accessibility, manipulation possibilities, interactivity and networking. With these attributes in digital printmaking, a visual representation became possible that was not seen in traditional printmaking with the realistic representation, unlimited replication and adjustment of image. Moreover, with the flow of postmodernism, printmaking expanded its area by intergrating with other genre such as painting, installation work, or by being produced in the form of bookart turning out into various works.
However, in the case of normal high school art class digital printmaking is not fully understood because it is based on the textbook in which contents are mainly about traditional printmaking techniques. Examining the five kinds of 'Art' textbooks and the five kinds of 'Art and Life' textbooks of current 2007 curriculum, we can realize the contents mainly consist of traditional printmaking such as convex printmaking, concave printmaking, flat printmaking, and stencil. The explanation about the making process is limited to its particular techniques as well. Despite the inclusion of digital printmaking in textbooks, it is difficult for students to understand digital printmaking as expanded form of printmaking and it is rare for students to directly experience it because textbooks lack the explanation of concepts and techniques. Likewise, digital printmaking lessons which are not able to offer experiences about various techniques can discourage students' interests in creative activities.
Thus, this study presents three ways, assorted above, to improve these situations using digital media in printmaking class. Through Digital printmaking, mage replication and transformation, digital printmaking integrated with pictures or installation work, digital printmaking of the bookart form, students are more likely to be interested in producing piece of work by paying attention to their surroundings and expressing it visually. Furthermore, by making a piece of art beyond genre and form, students can understand and experience modern art and by exhibiting and appreciating their own work with the Internet students can freely interact with viewers. This study has educational significance in the point of activating highschool digital printmaking class by presenting the class that applies a representing way of image specifically.
