Nowadays, in the era of the fourth industrial revolution after the second and third industrial revolutions, many areas of society have been emerged in various forms. Those phenomena has also a great impact on the design area, but there are only a few of data to confirm the relationship between design area and social phenomena. Also, for designers whose number increases every year, the expansion of design area in future affects their profession and livelihood, so there is a growing interest in how to prepare future. Design can approach to other disciplines creatively, which is called design thinking. This plays a major role in expanding the scope of design area by combining with various fields. In particular, it plays
an important role in solving social problems, and the need is being recognized not only for designers but also for non-designers. As a result, many companies are trying to place people who can perform design work in various fields.
Therefore, in order to visually confirm the changes of the design area according to the age change, we considered the following phenomena. In the first chapter, the design history of Korea was classified into nine stages from the before 1940s to 2010s, We have extracted meaningful events to investigate changes in design roles through reliable data. In the second chapter, we extracted the change of departments related to the design area through the homepages of 102 universities in Korea. In the third chapter, design-related occupations were extracted based on the five occupation books including the 1969 Korean occupational dictionary published by the Korea Employment Information Service. In the fourth chapter, we summarized the contents of chapters 1, 2, and 3 as a aggregate chronology, and investigated the change of the design area according to the age change.
The phenomena derived from the aggregate chronology can be summarized as follows. Prior to the 1940s, there was a lack of environment to establish the concept of design or cultivate talent. In the 1940s, the United States Army Military Government in Korea was stationed and, throughout the society, culture and arts are accommodated. Also the foundation for modern design education was established in accordance with the European Revival Plan. In the 1950s, after the liberation, the field of industrial design is established through active acceptance of American culture. In the 1960s, the importance of domestic and international industrial design began to be recognized. In the name of department, the design name did not appear yet, but in the job title, the designer started to appear for the first time. In the 1970s, the design area began to expand actively in a wide range of fields such as domestic and international visual and industrial fields, and the term design was actively used. In the 1980s, the advertising design emerged through issues such as the Olympics and politics. In the 1990s, with the advent of World-Wide-Web and Photoshop, the area of design has expanded explosively. In the 2000s, with the advent of smart phones, the fusion with IT field have become important, and the area are rapidly converging with the digital image field. In the 2010s, the technological development fused with the design characteristics through the third industrial revolution, and the scope of various fields are expanded explosively.
Observing the above phenomena, future technologies such as the fourth industrial revolution and artificial intelligence are rapidly developed and commercialized, but the education is not actively reflected yet, and the occupation field is also slowly expanding. In this context, this paper wishes to be a chance to think again about the attitudes and skills that designers should have in these situations. Also we hope to utilize this paper as a reference material for designers to recognize and prepare the trends of the design field in the future. Finally, in line with the upcoming fourth industrial revolution, we hope that designers would play a competent role with integrating their design ideas and skills with various fields, leading industrial development, presenting a vision for the future, and demonstrating their ability to solve many upcoming problems.
