인종의 프리즘으로 본 미국사:『미국사연구』에 나타난 인종사 연구의 흐름 = American History through the Prism of Race: Trends in Racial Historiography in The Korean Journal of American History

국문 초록 (Abstract)

미국의 역사는 곧 인종의 역사라고 말해도 결코 과언은 아니다. 국내 미국사 연구자들은 이러한 미국사의 어두운 현실이 어떻게 만들어지고 작동해 왔는지, 그리고 이에 맞서 수많은 이들이 어떻게 저항했는지를 보여준다는 점에서 큰 의의를 지닌다. 그들은 백인 중심주의를 정교하게 해체하였을 뿐만 아니라 백인성을 비롯한 인종 범주가 사회적으로 구성된 자의적인 개념이며, 정치적 필요와 권력에 따라 그 의미와 경계가 변화해 왔음을 밝혀냈다. 국내 연구자들은 또한 피억압 인종의 목소리에 귀 기울이며 인종 정치의 역동적인 모습을 포착하고자 했으며, 인종 집단 내부에서 벌어진 갈등과 협력의 양상에도 주목했다. 나아가 그들은 도시사, 젠더사, 법제사 등 다양한 분야로 연구의 외연을 확장함으로써 인종 분리와 차별이 미국의 역사에서 어떠한 모습으로 나타났는지를 두텁게 묘사하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

It is no exaggeration to say that the history of the United States is a history of race. The works of Korean historians are of great significance because they have revealed how this dark reality of American history is constructed and maintained. They have also revealed how countless individuals resist it. They not only have sophisticatedly deconstructed white supremacy, but also have demonstrated that racial categories including whiteness are socially constructed and inherently arbitrary, with their meanings and boundaries shifting according to political needs and power dynamics. Domestic scholars have sought to capture the dynamics of racial politics by listening to voices of oppressed racial groups, while paying attention to conflict and cooperation within racial groups. Furthermore, they have expanded their research into fields of urban history, gender history, and legal history to create a richer picture of the ways in which racial segregation and discrimination have played out in American history.
