This study is on the 4 family-history novels which was written under the similar conditions and periods in China and Korea.
Three Generations, written by Yum Sang-Seop and Chae Man-Sick's The absolute peaceful period were chosen from Korean novels and Ba jin's Family and Lao She's Four Generations under One Roof were selected from Chinese novels, which are all considered to be the typical family-history novels of each countries.
The four novels mentioned above are all describing the whole process of forming and collapsing of expended families made up of four-level generations. This study is focused on the characteristics and conflicts among the generations consisting of the families.
At the top is the first generation which controls the whole family. The members of this generation is proud of their belonging to the past feudal age, when the individuals, families, the society and the nation were all integrated as a whole one. But the changed outer world is threatening their own established world. And it is natural that we find the common attitude of shutting themselves away in their own private closet. Futhermore they have the dreaming of continuity in common.
There is the members of the second generation who have barely escaped from the outdated world but haven't founded their own viewpoint. They have the characteristics of drifting away having no attitudes whatsoever being controlled by the instinct. Accordingly, they are controlled by the principle of pleasure.
Lastly, We can find out the members of third generation who can see the end of the old world and trying to break down the structure of it aggressively. They are divided into two groups. One is family-oriented and the other is society-oriented and of course they have totally different attitudes towards the function of family.
Although the four novels have these characteristic in common, they were written in two different countries. And this study is going to try to figure out how these stages are reflected differently in those novels.
In Korean novels, the trace of self censureship is easily noticed compared with those of China. It's probably because that there was the complete control of Japanese colonial rules in Korea. And also there were significant difference of women's life styles among the family members. Females described in the two Korean novels are leading their isolated lives. They never sit at tables with men nor they share social activities together.
But women in Chinese novels usually have meals with men members and enjoy drinking with them as well. More intensive study is required to explain the difference of attitude towards females between the two countries which was under the same feudal system.
Lastly, the size of the families depicted in these novels are also different in two countries. This phenomenon can be understood in the context that there were different conceptions of the so called extended family system between China and Korea. In China, it is common that all sons and grandsons of the head of one family live together under the same roof. But traditionally all sons but the eldest are supposed to move out and form other families in Korea.
