현대 한국의 간화선 = Discourses on the issues of ganhwa Seon in contemporary Korea

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문의 목적은 대한불교조계종의 주요 수행법인 간화선과 관련된 논쟁을 검토하고， 그 논쟁의 내용을 비판적 관점에서 분석한 후， 불교 수행의 대안을 모색하려는데 있다. 제l장 머리말에 이은 제2장에서는 한국 간화선의 기원과 역사적 전개를， 제3장에서는 승단과 학계에서 전개된 간화선에 관한 논쟁을， 제4장에서는 현대 한국에서 간화선이 가진 문제점을, 제5장에서는 기존의 불교수행에 대한 대안을 제시하였다. 현대 한국의 간화선은 그 목표를 포함하여 상당한 문제점들을 가지고 있으며， 승단의 주장과는 달리， 역사적으로도 철학적으로도 그것이 가장 뛰어난 수행법이란 증거도 없다. 따라서 한국 불교계는 화두 절대주의를 넘어 다양한 수행법을 수용하고， 불교수행의 정의 또한 새롭게 수립할 필요가 있다. 사성제를 포함한 붇다의 기본 가르침에 대한 바른 이해와 그것의 실천화 과정은 그 한 가지 대안이 될 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this article was to examine discourses on the issues of ganhwa Seon, meditation of observing the critical phrase and virtually the only type of meditation used in contemporary Korean monasteries, in contemporary Korea, analyze them from a critical point of view, and propose alternative ideas to Buddhist practice. Following the Introduction of this paper, Section Two of this article discussed the origin of ganhwa Seon and its historical development in Korea. Section Three examined discourses on problems with ganhwa Seon developed, in particular, between the Buddhist community and the academic world. Section Four analyzed the issues of ganhwa Seon in contemporary Korea. Finally, Section Five proposed alternative ideas to Buddhist practice for a better future of Korean Buddhism. As a result, it appeared that Korean ganhwa Seon had a lot of problems to be resolved, including its unclear goal, and unlike Korean Seon monks have argued thus far, had no reason for being considered the best soteriology from both the historical and philosophical perspectives. I came to a conclusion that: Korean Seon circles need to redefine the notion of Buddhist practice beyond ganhwa Seon absolutism as ‘a process of one’s living up to the basic teachings of the Buddha, including the Four Noble Truths I and accept diverse ways of practice and to fulfill the goal.
