In every society, sex has been one of the most universal criteria for social differentiation. Very analogous to this biological difference, there has been certain personality traits that are assumed, by many to be inherently related to being either male or female; i.e., sex roles.
People learns the basic features of their appropriate sex role early in the life. From a very early age they learn to which sex they belong, and thereafter, learn which behaviors are appropriate for them as members of their sex. Interactionist theorists, however, suggest that socialization is a continuous process which occurs in the whole life of every human being. This provides the rationale for the present attempt to devide the individual life span into six phases from infancy through old ages and examine how Sex Role Socialization unfolds, and what its effects are for each period.
Given the standpoint, historical trends of sex role concept are shortly reviewed and next, three theoretical Perspectives-Freud's psychoanalytic theory, Social learning theory and cognitive development theory-are examined. Finally, Process and effects of sex role socialization are discussed for every six stage of individual life cycle,
From the discussion, it turns out that there remains yet an very strong and stable pattern that reinforces sterotyped traditional sex roles emphasizing passive or subodinate roles for females. It is also acknowledged that as far as sex role socialization concerns, adolescence is the period of more crucial importance that any other ones, including infancy or early childhood.
