Alleys, public space between building, have many potentials for various activities with adequate spaces. It is a space where human interaction occurred and community experienced can acquired. Those alley areas which has negative perspective has been turned to a space with better environment quality for the community to spend more time in the alley. As a result of alley regeneration process, the increase in the spatial quality of back alley public space could bring more public users to the alleys resulting a disturbance of personal space of the resident.
The purpose of this study is to analyze and to propose a design solution , how the personal space of the resident is disturbed regarding to effect of regenerated alley in Yangon which has width and length 6.86m x 152.4 m based on the human visual perspective in terms of visual privacy and to propose a design strategy considering both privacy of the resident and the public space area of the alley. Based on the current situation of the alley space, this research focused on how privacy and public space are related. The main idea of this research is figure out affective human visual privacy of resident and to propose a design solution which can enhance the coexistence of the public and private space.
In order to understand the human visual perspective in the alley area, one of the alleys in Yangon, Central Business district was analyzed based on two criteria_ the visual distance range and the visual limit angle. As a research method, first the research on visual perspective situation from the point of the alley users and how it is affecting the privacy of the resident. Secondly, different design strategies of protecting privacy of residents are being applied and how the public space area of the alley is affected.
Among the different design strategies, folding method has been chosen to apply to the back alley public space. As the back alley in the CBD has the unique characteristics in length, width and height, the potential of the folding is a preferable solution for achieving the private space for the public space in the narrow and long back alley while protecting the visual privacy disturbance from the users of the public space.
From the analysis of the different design strategies of visual privacy and public, a proposal of a protective design strategy is be provided as a conclusion. The conclusion which can be led by this design strategies are 1) to strength the privacy level of the resident 2) To provide an alley public space 3) To provide better privacy level in terms of visual perspective and 4) to provide privacy design strategies for the resident while having a better control of human interaction.
This thesis able to aid designing alleys for privacy protection.
