      다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to examine different aspects of the transformation of beliefs in Hakusan (白山) focusing on the Literary Arts of ancient and medieval Japan.
In ancient literary arts, Mt. Hakusan was depicted as a snowy mountain in Manyoshu, The Tale of Genji, and Sarashina Nikki. However, in Hakusan no Ki, Mt. Hakusan was regarded as the mountain where the great virtuous god Shoichi Hakusan Myouri Daibosatsu resided, and its main deity was the eleven-faced Kannon Bosatsu. And the Pillow Book mentions “Kannon (Goddess of Mercy) of Hakusan”, because it was generally known as Kannon. In Utsuho Monogatari and Konjaku Monogatari-shu, Hakusan is stated as one of the sacred places for ascetic practices in the mountains and forests, indicating that the ascetic practices at Hakusan were highly valued. Furthermore, in Ryohin Hisho, Hakusan is referred to as an exceptionally high mountain along with Hieizan.
In medieval literature, Hakusan Gongen was worshipped as the primary deity of Sugyo Temple in Ippen Hijirie, and was described as the “dragon palace of the female body” of Hakusan in Gikeiki. The Hakusan in Kaga Province is called as the Shirayama Hime Shrine, and the deity is a goddess named Kikurihime, who is mentioned in the Fuso Meigetsu Shu and Dai Nihonkoku Ichinomiyaki. Furthermore, in the Shasekishu, Honji was depicted as an incarnation of the eleven-faced Avalokitesvara, the deity who punishes the gods. Moreover, in the Shujinki, the Hakusan deity was regarded as Izanami, due to her ambivalent nature as both the goddess of fertility and the goddess of death.
