항마촉지인 불상의 신라 등장시기와 배경 －부석사 무량수전 소조여래좌상을 중심으로－ = The Appearance period and Background of Buddha statues which has The Mudra seal of touching the Earth in Silla －Focusing on the seated Buddha statue of Muryangsujeon at Buseoksa Temple－

국문 초록 (Abstract)

부석사는 의상이 문무왕의 명을 받아 676년 2월에 소백산 남쪽에 창건한 사찰이다. 본문에서는 소조여래좌상의 불단 아래에 깔린 녹유전과 불상 하단의 와적기단을 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 부석사 무량수전 소조여래좌상은 창건기의 원형이 남아 있는 불상임을 논의하였다.
부석사 창건배경에 대해서는 나당전쟁이 격렬하게 지속되는 676년 2월의 시대적 배경을 주목하였다. 당시 시대적 상황의 분석을 통해 의상이 왕명을 받고 부석사를 창건한 것은 나당전쟁과 직접적인 관련이 있음을 논하였다. 부석사가 소백산맥 남쪽에 조성된 이유는 부석사 북쪽 소백산맥 넘어 분포해 있는 고대 산성들과 관련이 있는 것으로 파악하였다. 이와 더불어 부석사와 멀지 않은 곳에 있었던 봉화 북지리 지림사가 부석사의 위치 선정에도 영향을 미쳤을 것으로 추정하였다. 지림사가 삼국시대 이미 다양한 석불이 조성되고 화랑의 순례지역으로 활용되었을 가능성을 고려한 것이다.
당나라와의 치열한 전쟁기간 중에 창건된 부석사는 주변 지역 백성들을 위무하고 소백산맥 북쪽에 분포한 다수의 고대 산성들과 후방의 왕경을 원활하게 연계하는 일종의 후방 배후기지 역할을 하였던 것으로 추정된다. 이와 더불어 불력에 기대어 당나라 군대를 몰아내고자 하는 종교적 열망 역시 반영되었다. 부석사 소조여래좌상은 의상이 부석사를 창건할 때 아미타불로 조성하였던 것으로 알려져 있다. 그럼에도 아미타불이 항마촉지인을 취하고 있는 이유는 당나라 군대를 불력에 기대어 제압해야 할 항마의 대상으로 보았기 때문으로 추정하였다.
부석사 무량수전 소조여래좌상은 우리나라 최초의 항마촉지인 불상이라 할 수 있으며 석굴암 본존불을 비롯한 촉지인계 불상의 한반도 등장을 알리는 기념비적인 불상이다.

Buseoksa Temple is a temple built by Uisang on the south side of Sobaeksan Mountain in February 676 under the order of King Munmu. In this article, we looked at the foundation made of green bricks and roof tiles under the Buddha statue. Through this, it was discussed that the Buddha statue in Muryangsujeon Hall of Buseoksa Temple is a Buddha statue that still retains its original appearance from the time of its founding.
Regarding the background of the founding of Buseoksa Temple, attention was paid to the historical background of February 676, when the Silla-Tang War was raging. Through analysis of the situation of the time, the fact that monk Uisang received the royal order and founded Buseoksa Temple is directly related to the Silla-Tang War. The reason why Buseoksa Temple was built south of the Sobaek Mountains is related to the ancient fortresses distributed across the Sobaek Mountains to the north of Buseoksa Temple.
Buseoksa Temple, founded during the fierce war with the Tang Dynasty, played a role in comforting the people of the surrounding area. In addition, it also played a role in smoothly connecting the numerous ancient mountain fortresses distributed to the north of the Sobaek Mountain Range with the royal border behind it. The construction of Buseoksa Temple also had a religious purpose: to drive out the Tang army through the power of Buddha. The reason why the Buddha statue at Buseoksa Temple is shaped like a hand to ward off evil is because the Tang Dynasty was seen as an object that needed to be subdued.
The Buseoksa Temple Muryangsujeon Buddha is Korea's first Buddha statue with a hand shape said to ward off evil. The Buseoksa Temple Buddha statue is a monumental Buddha statue that announced the emergence of the main Buddha in Seokguram Grotto.
