This research attempted to reveal the value and limitation of fair trade with critical perspective. Fair trade has been introduced in the producers of developing countries to the increase of market accessibility, the growth of economic benefit, and the sustainable development through the increase of empowerment in the local community. In developing countries, fair trade has derived positive effects such as income growth, labor right, social infrastructure development, and eco-friendly production system, and in developed countries fair trade has grown rapidly with the increase of ethical consumption and also with the utilization of fair trade movements and campaigns. Fair trade thus increased ethical consumption focusing on the social solidarity with material based consumption, and also evoked the importance of sustainable development as the development strategy for developing countries. However, fair trade has shown some limitations with the dependence of market economy with the entry of multinational firms into the market, the increase of the fetishism of ethical consumption, and the fair trade labelling system has caused on the fragmentation of local community and the deepening of marginalization for the producers of the South.
