A theoretical study of the shock wave is presented for ion exchange of one-dimensional, fixed bed, single solute system. Experimental time-domain analysis enables us to demonstrate the validity and usefulness of the shock layer theory by introducing theoretical propagation speed of shock layer into exchange phenomena. Shock wave theory is applied to the Nickel-Cation resin system and valuable informations are discussed quantitatively in the view-points of operation and design of ion exchange column.
