<P>A series of novel TTF derivatives has been synthesized. Polarized optical microscopy (POM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques reveal the first room temperature columnar liquid crystal based on TTF.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>The first room temperature columnar liquid crystal based on tetrathiafulvalene was synthesized. The highly ordered structure incorporating the tetrathiafulvalene unit can be a promising candidate for a wide range of electronic applications.
