화엄경에 담긴 신중(神衆) 사상 연구Ⅰ- 세주묘엄품을 중심으로 - = Study Ⅰ on the Idea of Sinjung(神衆) Contained in 『The Avatamska Sutra』 - Focusing on 「Sejumyoeompum」

This thesis examines the idea of Hwaeom Sinjung contained in 『The Avatamska Sutra』 centering around 「Sejumyoeompum」 in 『The Avatamska Sutra』 consisting of 80 volumes.
Through 『Ahamgyeong』, we can see that Sinjung appearing while Buddha was alive were mostly heavenly gods.
Hwaeom Seongjung is called as ‘Hwaeom Sinjung’ or ‘Hwaeom Sinjang’, and as it is abbreviated as ‘Sinjung’, too, it is quite a familiar and intimate name to Buddhists. It is because the name has been used as a form of faith up to now in Buddhist temple ritual.
While Sinjung (神衆) is preached sporadically in various forms here and there in Buddhist scriptures, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva preaches intensively about the owner of the world as a main preacher in 「Sejumyoeompum」 of 『The Avatamska Sutra』. Sinjung (神衆) in 『The Avatamska Sutra』 doctrinally preach about the Buddhist writings of Nirvana acquired themselves and are also characterized by their roles as Hwaeom Seongjung.
Analyzing the idea of Sinjung by arranging Sinjung corresponding to Japryu in Sipju, the cultivation stages of Hwaeom, this study has found that the biggest characteristic is the preaching of arranging those Sinjung on each of the ten items of Sipju.
After arranging the Bodhisattva in Balsimju (發心住), Choji of Sipju, it arranges nine groups of Sinjung in the rest Ju (住). It means that the 2nd Chijiju (治地住) can be arranged in Jipgeumgangsin, the 3rd Suhaengju (修行住) in Sinjungsin, the 4th Saenggwiju in Jokhaengsin, the 5th Gujokbangpyeonju (具足方便住) in Doryangsin, the 6th Jeongsimju (正心住) in Juseongsin, the 7th Bultoeju (不退住) in Jujisin, the 8th Dongjinju (童眞住) in Jusansin, the 9th Beopwangjaju (法王子住) in Jurimsin, and the 10th Gwanjeongju (灌頂住) in Juyaksin.
The writings of Nirvana acquired by Sinjung corresponding to Japryu out of Isaengjung [異生衆] are also preached diversely in Pum. Therefore, we can assume that the ultimate point that Buddhism started to be settled down firmly as a belief in Korea is the very Hwaeom Sinjung appearing in that Pum.
