하워드 코틀러(Howard Kottler)의 포스트모던 도예에 관한 연구(1970~1988) = A Study on the Howard Kottler's Post-modern Ceramics(1970~1988)

Howard Kottler is considered an avant-gardist and post-modern ceramist, who leads post-modernism in contemporary art. He took the lead in material, medium, and consciousness change, and contributed to the establishment of the status of contemporary ceramics toward his later working years in the 1970s to the 80s. This study is centered on Kottler’s later works regarding his post-modern strategies (assemblage, photo-collage, super object, beyond media, non-functional, dematerialization, a play on words, etc.) and considered the development of Kottler’s destruction of emulation and non-functionality of practical materials. In addition, it looked into the critical attitude of discerning the division of advanced art and substandard art. In essence, it served as a tool to criticize society and art, contemplating the possibility of contemporary ceramics and post-modern phenomenon. He utilized ‘camouflage’, ‘appropriation’, and ‘borrowing’ of the post-modernists, and expanded the concept and territory of contemporary ceramics, rightfully claiming the recognition as one of the most influential post-modernist.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

오늘날 하워드 코틀러는 현대도예에서 포스트모더니즘을 이끈 아방가르디스트이자 포스트모던 도예가로 평가되고있다. 코틀러 작업의 후반기인 1970-80년대, 전통적인 맥락에 머물러 있던 현대도예분야에서 소재, 매체, 의식의 변화를 주도했으며, 동시대미술 안에서 현대도예의 위상정립에 크게 기여하였다. 본 연구는 코틀러의 후기 작업을 중심으로 그의 포스트모던 전략들을(앗상블라주, 포토콜라주, 슈퍼오브제, 탈 매체, 비기능성, 비 물질화, 언어유희 등) 살펴봄으로써 그가 전개시킨 모방 기능의 파괴 및 실용사물의 비기능성 논의 그리고 고급미술과 저급미술의 구분에 대한 비판적 태도 등 사회와 미술의 비평도구로서 현대도예의 가능성과 포스트모던 현상 등을 고찰하였다. 그는 포스트모더니스트들의 ‘위장’, ‘전유’, ‘차용’ 등의 주요전략들을 사용했으며, 현대도예의 개념 및 영역확장을 위한 인습타파와 혁신을 이끈 현대도예의 대표적인 포스트모더니스트이다.
