기호학적 관점을 적용한 실향민 메모리얼 설계 연구 = A Study on Designing a Memorial for Displaced People with a Strategic Use of Semiotics

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 한국전쟁 이후 반세기 이상이 지난 분단의 현실을 환기하고 윗세대의 선조들과 후세의 방문자들을 만나게 하는 목적을 가진 메모리얼 프로젝트의 설계과정을 다룬다. 특별히, 기호학의 갈래 중 기호작용의 다각적 역동성을 강조하는 퍼스의 기호학을 설계단계에 도입함으로써 메모리얼 프로젝트를 더욱 풍부하게 표현할 수 있음을 살펴본다. 이에 본고에서는 기호학을 설계 전개 및 피드백 과정에 적용할 수 있는 전략을 도출하고 그 적절성을 검토하였다. 첫째, 기호작용을 통해 기호가 역동적으로 관계를 맺고 확장되는 퍼스의 기호학을 조경설계에 접목하였다. 퍼스의 기호학은 대지를 둘러싼 환경과 맥락에 대한 설계가의 해석을 공간화하여 옥외 공간을 조성하고 여러 이해관계 사이에서 관계를 조율하는 조경설계의 다중적이고 복합적인 속성을 드러내고 증폭하는 데 활용할 수 있었다. 둘째, 기호학의 해석적 접근을 접목하여, 풍성해진 메모리얼의 사회문화적 서사를 폭넓게 담아내고, 조경설계 프로세스에도 적용할 수 있는 실천적 전략인 다중스케일적 접근을 제안하였다. 셋째, 퍼스 기호학의 삼원적 관계를 다양한 스케일에 대응하여 중첩적으로 적용하고 해석 및 설계 드로잉을 제시함으로써 다원적 스케일 차원에서의 해석적 메시지를 가시적으로 제안할 수 있었다. 본고는 주어진 설계조건들 사이에서 의도된 경험을 제공하는 공간을 직조하고, 다수의 스케일 차원에서의 해석적 메시지를 명시적으로 제안하는데 기호학을 활용하는 접근법이 유용함을 논의하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper discusses the design process of a memorial project that aims to recall the reality of division more than half a century after the Korean War and to bring together older generations with younger visitors. In particular, it examines how Peirce's semiotics, which emphasizes the multifaceted dynamics of semiosis among the branches of semiotics, can be applied to the design process to enrich the representation of the memorial project and how semiotics can be applied to design methodologies. The paper identifies strategies for applying semiotics to the design development as well as feedback process and examines their applicability. First, Peirce's semiotics, which emphasizes the dynamics by which signs relate to each other and expand through semiosis, can be used to compose spaces from the designer's interpretation of the environment and context surrounding the site, revealing and amplifying the multiple and complex nature of landscape design in creating outdoor spaces and orchestrating relationships among multiple interests. Second, by incorporating the interpretive approach of semiotics in practice, a multi-scale approach was proposed as a practical strategy that can be applied to the landscape design process to capture the broader socio-cultural narrative of enriched memorials. Third, by applying the triadic relationship of Peirce's semiotics in a nested manner in response to different scales and presenting interpretive and design drawings, it was possible to clearly propose interpretive messages across multiple scale considerations. This paper has discussed the usefulness of an approach that utilizes semiotics to weave spaces that provide the intended experience and to explicitly propose interpretive messages across multiple scale dimensions.
