The purpose of this study is to present the need for classes using newspaper articles in Korean reading education, and to analyze the needs of the learners and to present the methods of Korean reading education using newspaper articles. Newspaper articles are very useful in providing up-to-date information on Korean society as a whole in real time. Newspapers are especially useful in Korean reading education, because there were shown accurate and rich vocabularies with various genres of writing.
For this reason, the discussion of reading education using newspaper articles was brisk. Therefore, this study aims to improve practicality and efficiency of Korean language education that cannot be met in textbook-oriented reading classes. proposing educational measures in this study will arouse learners' interest and enhance learning effectiveness for reading Korean.
In chapter 1, the purpose and necessity of reading education using newspaper articles were presented and the direction of reading education using newspaper articles was established by examining relevant prior researches.
Chapter 2 shows that, through reading education and prior researches on NIE, NIE will be valuable in improving reading skills and established an effective NIE enabled reading education model.
Chapter 3 will also analyze learners’ various requirements for NIE by conducting a survey to find out how NIE is being used in Korean language education in China. A survey of 120 Chinese advanced Korean learners was conducted to analyze the status of NIE reading education in China and the patterns, educational experiences and demands of reading newspaper articles. In summing up the results of the survey, learners showed high expectations for NIE, recognized the value of newspaper articles as educational materials, and read newspaper articles mainly for the improvement of language skills and cultural understanding.
Chapter 4 proposed practical NIE teaching methods based on theoretical research (Chapter 2) and realistic requirements (Chapter 3), as a key part of this study. In order to develop effective education methods, the teaching model was designed and the criteria for selecting newspaper articles as learning materials and teaching methods for each step, such as pre-reading, in- reading and after-reading steps.
As a conclusion, Chapter 5 will briefly summarize the contents of this study.
