한국 주요 기업의 연구개발 생산성 분석：자료포괄분석을 활용하여 = Measuring R&D Productivity of the Major Korean Firms：Using Data Envelopment Analysis

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study aims to analyze the R&D productivity of the major Korean firms. The analytical approach is of great importance, as measuring of the R&D productivity leads firms to improve their productivity with the efficient deployment of resources. We selected the firms listed in ‘KOSPI 200 sectors’ for output－oriented variable returns to scale (VRS) DEA model. Overall, the R&D productivity of the major Korean firms is excellent. Empirical results show that the R&D productivity is maintaining its balance with relatively low standard deviation.
Furthermore, benchmark, returns－to－scale, and slack analyses were performed to better understand the R&D productivity. POSCO and other firms with desirable R&D productivity have been used as benchmarks for the post－hoc analyses. Based on our benchmark analysis, we listed the firms with outstanding R&D productivity. In addition, the firms engaging in shipbuilding and transportation sectors tend to retain the high portion of the firms listed in our benchmarks. According to the results derived from return to scale analysis, we found that most of the firms are in the status of decreasing returns to scale. In regard to input slack, we found that expensed R&D investment is more efficient than capitalized R&D investment for the Korean firms.
The results of this study provide some important managerial implications to Korean business managers. Not only increasing the amount of R&D investment is important, but also managing the outcome resulting from the R&D investment is critical. In addition, a special attention should be paid to adopting capitalized R&D expenditure in order to enhance R&D productivity. From methodological point of view, we suggested an alternative approach to deal with negative values in DEA that have complicated firm－level analysis. This alternative approach may be replicated to other DEA－using research agendas.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 우리나라 주요 기업들의 연구개발 효율성을 분석하고, 연구개발 생산성에 대한 파악을 위하여 벤치마크 분석, 규모효율성 분석, 그리고 연구개발비의 슬랙 분석을 시도하였다. 연구개발 생산성 현황에 대한 파악은 제한된 자원의 효율적인 활용을 통한 생산성 개선을 위하여 매우 중요하다. 이를 위하여 ‘KOSPI 200 섹터지수’에 속한 대기업들 중 금융업을 제외한 기업들을 대상으로 산출지향 규모수익가변(Output－oriented VRS) 자료포괄분석(Data Envelopment Analysis：DEA)을 활용하였다. 분석결과 한국 주요 기업들의 연구개발 생산성은 전체적으로 우수한 것으로 나타났으며, 표준편차 또한 작게 산출되어 기업들 간의 연구개발 역량이 적절한 균형을 유지하고 있음이 밝혀졌다.
벤치마크 분석을 통하여 POSCO 등이 많은 한국의 주요 기업들로부터 참조 대상이 되었던 것으로 밝혀졌으며 이를 통해 연구개발 생산성 우수기업으로 판단할 수 있다. 또한, 조선과 운송 섹터가 가장 높은 비율로 참조 대상 기업을 보유하고 있었다. 규모효율성 분석 결과, 모든 산업 섹터에 있어서 규모수익체감 상태에 있는 기업들의 비율이 상대적으로 많은 것으로 밝혀졌다. 투입변수 측면의 슬랙 분석 결과 우리나라 기업들의 경우 자산으로 처리된 연구개발비가 비용으로 처리된 연구개발비보다 비효율적으로 사용되고 있음이 밝혀졌다.
본 연구는 한국 주요 기업의 연구개발 생산성 현황 파악에 초점을 두었으며, 이를 통하여 기업의 의사결정자들에게 실무적인 시사점을 제시하였다는데 연구의 의의가 존재한다. 연구개발비의 증액 뿐 아니라 이에 따른 성과창출의 생산성을 개선해야 할 것이며, 자산으로 처리된 연구개발비의 효율적인 활용을 통한 연구개발 생산성의 개선을 도모해야 할 것이다. 또한, 기업 대상의 DEA 연구에서 애로사항이 될 수 있는 음수처리 문제에 대한 해결책을 제시하였고, 이는 기업을 대상으로 향후 DEA의 적용에 대하여 그 범위를 확장하였다는 데에 학문적인 의의가 존재한다.
