Although Dante’s critics concur that Dante does not display modern, secular selfhood, they diverge on the extent to which Dante expresses his individual personality. A point of contention is how to interpret the coronation scene at the end of Purgatorio XXVII, where Virgil crowns Dante while saying, “You over yourself I therefore crown and miter” (line 142). Ascoli and Steinberg, for example, debate about the kind of self that Dante becomes a master of: an autonomous artist or a voluntary traditionalist. Both critics focus on the interpretation of free will (“libero arbitrio”) in Dante’s work. However, this paper proposes another key term, “mind” (“mente”), in relation to free will to consider the issue of clarifying Dante’s notion of self. Hence, I examine the three episodes in which the mind is described in Purgatorio: Marco on free will, Virgil on love and free will, and Statius’ freedom of choice.
