This study has a purpose to show how consumer’s word-of-mouth intention was affected by self-congruity (actual self, ideal self). This research surveyed students of Department of Business Administration from Keimyung University. The survey was conducted from September 25th to September 28th of 2014. 221 surveys were distributed and 211 responses were used for the final analysis. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS 19.0 Statistical Program, which executed population statistical analysis of sample, liability analysis, validity analysis, and regression analysis.
In this research, the results can be summarized as the following. First, the satisfaction of customers is affected by self-congruity (actual self, ideal self). Second, when satisfaction is high after purchasing a product or service, consumers showed high word-of-mouth intention. Third, ideal self-image congruity affect word-of-mouth intention directly but actual self-image congruity did not. Fifth, when comparing actual self-image and ideal self-image, ideal self image showed higher influence in word-of-mouth than actual self-image.
Based on the study results, consumers show high satisfaction when buying something that corresponds to self-image when selecting product or service, and consumers talk positively. Also, when selecting a product that corresponds with actual self-image, consumers do not talk about it, but they talk positively to others when selecting products that correspond with ideal self-image. Especially, through chi-square difference test, actual self-image and ideal self-image have a clear difference in the influence on word-of-mouth. This gives implications on executing marketing strategies in the future.
