종교조직의 위기 유형과 대응 전략 : 불교, 천주교, 개신교 중심으로 = Crisis Types and Crisis Response Strategies in Religious Organizations : Focusing on Buddhism, Catholicism, Protestantism.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

위기가 개인이든 조직이든 피할 수 없는 것이라 한다면, 종교조직도 마찬가지로 위기에서 자유롭지는 않을 것이다. 모든 조직들은 위기 상황에 대처할 준비가 필요하다. 그럼에도 불구하고 다양한 위기 상황에 직면한 종교조직은 어떠한 위기 유형에 노출되어 있으며 위기 상황에서 어떻게 위기 대응을 하는지에 대한 학문적 연구는 부족한 실정이다.
본 연구의 목적은 종교조직이 직면할 수 있는 위기 상황을 유형화하고, 위기의 원인 및 종교조직이 사용하는 위기 대응 전략 유형을 분석하는 것이다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 사건 단위별로 분류한 신문기사의 내용분석을 통해, 종교조직이 직면할 수 있는 위기 상황들을 유형화하고, 종교조직의 주된 위기의 원인과 위기의 상황에서 종교조직은 어떠한 위기 대응 전략을 사용하였는지를 살펴보았다. 또한 불교, 천주교, 개신교를 포함한 3대 종교별 위기 유형과 원인, 위기 대응 전략도 함께 분석함으로써, 위기 상황에 대한 종교별 차이가 있는지도 함께 고찰하였다.
내용분석을 통해 유형화 한 종교조직의 위기는 소문, 자연재해, 악의, 도전, 사고, 위반, 교리위협의 일곱 가지 유형으로 분류할 수 있었다. 이중 한국의 종교조직은 위반의 사례가 가장 높은 것으로 나타났으며, 종교조직별 위기 유형의 분포 차이 또한 유의미한 것으로 분석되었다. 위기 발생 주체와 위기 발생 방향으로 구분하여 분석한 종교조직의 위기 원인의 경우, 개인보다는 단체로부터, 외부에서보다는 내부에서 발생한 경우가 많았다. 종교별 위기의 주체와 발생 방향도 종교별로 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 위기 상황에서의 위기 대응 전략은 사과, 개선, 정당화, 변명, 부인, 공격, 침묵, 성찰 및 쇄신과 같이 여덟 가지의 유형으로 분류되었으며, 한국의 종교조직의 주된 위기 대응 전략은 침묵인 것으로 나타났다. 종교별 위기 대응 전략도 종교별로 유의미한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다.
본 연구는 종교조직이 직면할 수 있는 위기들을 유형화하고 종교조직이 위기 상황에서 사용하는 위기 대응 전략을 분석함으로써 종교조직에서만 나타나는 위기의 유형들과 위기 대응 전략을 새로이 분류하여 종교조직에서의 위기 관리 기초자료로서 의미를 지닌다. 특히, 종교별 위기 유형과 위기의 원인, 위기 대응 전략을 비교 분석함으로써, 종교별 주요 위기 유형 및 위기 대응 전략이 상이하다는 것을 밝혀냈다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

If crises are inevitable whether for individuals or organizations, then religious organizations will not be free from crises as well. All organizations need to be prepared to respond to crisis situations. Nevertheless, these is lack of academic research on what kind of crisis types are exposed to religious organizations and how to respond to the crises.
This study attempts to categorize crisis types that religious organizations have faced with, to analyze the causes of crises, and the types of crisis response strategies used by religious organizations in crisis situations. To this end, this study categorized crisis situations that religious organizations may face, the causes of crises and response strategies religious organizations have in the crisis situations through the content analysis of newspaper articles classified by a case unit. Also, by analyzing crisis types, causes, and crisis response strategies for each of the three major religions including Buddhism, Catholicism, and Protestantism, it was also examined whether there are differences among the three religions in the crisis situation. The results of the study suggest that the crises of religious organizations can be classified into seven types: rumors, natural disasters, malice, challenges, accidents, violations, and doctrinal threats. Among them, the type violation was mostly appeared to religious organizations in Korea. The difference in the distribution of crisis types by religious organization was also analyzed to be significant. Regarding the causes of crises, which were analyzed separately by the entity that caused the crisis and the direction of the crisis, there were many cases where the crisis occurred from the group rather than the individual, and from the inside rather than the outside. It was also found that there were differences in the entity that caused the crisis and the direction of crisis by the three religious organizations. The results further suggest tht crisis response strategies were classified into eight types: apology, improvement, justification, excuses, denial, attack, silence, and reflection and renewal. It was also found that there were significant differences in crisis response strategies by religious organizations.
This study is significant in offering useful data for crisis management in the context of religious organizations by classifying crisis situations that are faced with religious organizations, analyzing the causes of crises, and categorizing crisis response strategies where religious organizations use in the crises. In particular, it was revealed that major crisis types and crisis response strategies for each religion were different by comparatively analyzing the types of crises, the causes of crises, and crisis response strategies by religion.
