사과와 능금, 그리고 '멎' = Three cognate terms relevant to malus

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글의 최종 목표는 계림유사에 나오는 림금왈 悶子訃(計)를 '멎'이라 읽으려는 데 있다. 셋째 한자 訃 또는 計 때문에 접근을 유보했던 것이나, 이제는 이를 다음 항목 黃漆의 黃이 이지러진 형태로 위로 올라붙은 결과로 판단하며 이를 제외시켜 '悶子'로 '멎'에 대응되는 표기로 인식한다. 그것은 우리나라에 自生하던 malus에 대한 이름이며 새로 들어온 새 품종의 지칭에 전용된 경우를 보인다 하겠다.
논의의 과정에서 사대와 환경에 따라 같은 이름이 다른 내용 또는 의미를 가지게 되는 경우들을 예시하며 문제의 이해를 돕도록 했다. malus에 관계된 세 단어 역학 관계, 길항과 협력의 역사를 국어에서 보거니와 '림금'을 중심으롤 동양 삼국의 언어상을 본다면 일본에서는 범칭으로 압도적인 위치에 있는 반면, 한국에서는 열등한 품종 또는 야생종, 혹은 방언형으로 쫓기는 위치에 있는가 하면, 종주국인 중국에서는 거의 절멸된 상황에 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The ultimate goal of this paper is to attain to read 悶子訃(計) or men-tsi¨-fu from Kyerim-Yusa(that is, gi-lin-lei-shi 鷄林類事) in an appropriate form. The meaning of the word is self-evident due to the corresponding Chinese heading lin-kin 림금 'apple, or malus' in Latin, whereas the Korean counterpart men-tsi¨-fu has been an annoyance, adequate forms hard to be found in any stages of the Korean language. Now I propose a solution of textual criticism for the troublesomeness. The third character fu is a mischievous intrusion of the head syllable of the next word. And it should be, authentically, huang 黃 of 黃漆 'dendropanax, but not varnish tree' ; fu is a correction of huang in my opinion. Now, the remaining men- tsi¨ corresponds to the M.K. m??cˇ meaning wild apples which grow naturally in Korea.
In the due course to the conclusion, I examined, in pretty detail, three competing terms relevant to malus. In China, once dominant as it was, lin-kin was repleaced by the mighty ping-gu, sha-gu scarcely surviving in the dictionary, nai(奈), on the other hand, suffered a mysterious change into a bigger version of apple from a wild species. In Korea, niŋ kim(＜lin-kin) is fighting a losing battle against sakwa(＜shagu), the latter being sweet and delicious. m??cˇ does not exist any more except in the north-east dialect, with the meaning changed into plu, Lin-kin thrives very well in Japan, almost unchallenged in the form of ringgo.
