[Purpose] With the growing emphasis on the importance of systematic financial education for university students, it is necessary to propose an effective teaching methodology for enhancing financial literacy. Therefore, this study presents a case of applying PBL for the subject related to personal financial management and discusses the effectiveness of PBL.
[Methodology] We plan two PBL modules: the first module related to bank products and cards, and the second module related to stocks. The PBL method is applied for four semesters based on the model of Barrows and Myers(1993), and we analyze learning effects and class satisfaction through final exams and lecture evaluation.
[Findings] As a result of the analysis, we find that the average score of the final exam increased after the introduction of PBL, indicating that the application of PBL has a positive effect on the learning outcomes. In addition, we confirm that students generally have high satisfaction with PBL class through the lecture evaluation results.
[Implications] This study presents a method that can effectively cultivate financial literacy using PBL. Based on the case of this study, it is expected that more diverse teaching methodologies will be applied in financial education in the future.
