The adversity of which the hero in <Spirited Away> experiences is the same process of maturity in which heros in fairy tales unavoidably undergo. As heros in fairy tales reborn through initiation with adversity, the hero in <Spirited Away> also reborns through adversity. This film follows the patterns and characteristics in fairy tales, i.e. initiation, heroism, antagonist and protagonist. Also this film expresses images of heros in blue, white, red colors through the symbol of water.
As a symbol of water, Haky, the dragon, is an important character, who emphasizes the characteristic of motherhood with blue and white colors. Teenagers surely have to leave from their mother to be an independent person. As heros in fairy tales become mature, leaving from their motherhood, Chihiro leaves from her mother and experiences adversity and difficulties and therefore, becomes individually. Deviation from her mother symbolize independence.
Spirited Away is a film of creative fantasy in which the director combines colors and water perfectly to symbolize heroes. And he uses the basic structure of fairy tales, i.e. deficiency, initiation, adversity and return which reflect the process of the hero's maturity. Especially with the symbol of water and colors, the film expresses a typical process of the hero's maturity in order to describe a deep longing for motherhood in the human's heart, to overcome it and to become independent.
