      This study tries to identify hermeneutic characteristics of Lao-tzu’s ideas interpretated by Yulgok, examining as subjects of investigation political-philosophical beliefs implicit in Sun-Eon. In particular, it focuses on the three keys following. First, Yulgok calls for belief in providence (the Mandate of Heaven), that is the central idea of Confucianism, and for self-consciousness. He imposes one’s beliefs on monism between Heaven and humans, postulating such characteristics of Heaven (Nature) as moral subjects. Also, he underlines what becoming a king means; a confluence of politics and ethics through completing one’s personality as well as self-realization of the Heaven`s mandate. Second, Yulgok highlights importance of belief in relation between language and political beliefs. In this, it is inevitably necessary for politicians to have a sense of responsibilities for gaining trust from the public through reliable actions, not false promises. As a Confucian scholar, Yulgok declares positive belief that the highest language corresponds to the Heaven`s mandate, while Lao-tzu retains a negative point of view of language. Third, Yulgok put a stress on interactive practice between politics and ethics through belief. According to him, true belief can be realized through objectifyingthe good and the evil as a whole, so that it is incorporated in transcendence beyond a dichotomous choice between them. And he asserts that true politics should be based on belief, and therein belief should be accompanied with self-expansion via political realization. As mentioned above, I examined implication of Sun-eon described in a political-philosophical context with regard to a belief issue. In this process, there was scientific significance to the extent that it minutely scrutinizes ‘belief’ as a mutual interface of interaction between Lao-tzu and Confucianism. Interpreted by the Confucian perspective, the view of belief described in Sun-eon can hardly be free from the fact that there is no question of deviation from Lao-tzu’s.
