“용기를 가지고 십자가를 지시오”: 기독교적 실존 철학으로 순교자 다시 읽기 = “Bear Your Cross with Courage’: Revisiting The Martyred with Christian Existential Philosophy.”

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문의 목적은 재미작가 김은국의 󰡔순교자󰡕를 무신론적 실존주의와 기독교 문학으로 양분된 연구방법론에서 벗어나 기독교적 실존 철학의 관점에서 재해석하는 것이다. 추리소설의 외양을 지닌 󰡔순교자󰡕는 심층구조에서 “신은 자기 백성이 당하는 고난을 알고 있는가?”라는 실존적인 물음에 대한 해답을 추구한다. 두 주요 인물인 신 목사와 이 대위, 진실과 사랑, 절망과 희망이라는 대립 구도는 생의 절망을 끌어안고 죽음의 십자가를 지려는 신 목사의 ‘존재의 용기’에서 와해한다. 그는 이 용기 속에서 신의 부재를 증명하는 듯한 절망적인 현실 속에서도 타인을 위한 삶의 희망을 포기하지 않는다. 그는 궁극적으로 신적인 사랑을 실천함으로써 “하나님이 그들을 돌보고 있고, 나도 그들을 돌보고 있다”라고 대답한다. 결론적으로 󰡔순교자󰡕는 인간 존재와 관계하며 인간 역사에 개입하는 하나님의 존재를 드러내는 기독교 실존주의 문학으로 읽힐 수 있다.

This paper reexamines The Martyred by Richard E. Kim through the framework of Christian existential philosophy, moving beyond conventional readings that categorize the novel as either atheistic existentialism or Christian literature. Despite the form of a detective novel, its deeper structure explores this existential question: “Is God aware of the suffering of His people?” The opposition between its two main characters—Pastor Shin and Captain Lee—as well as the contrasts between truth and love, despair and hope, ultimately dissolves through Shin’s “courage to be,” as he embraces life’s despair and bears the cross of death. Within this courage, he refuses to abandon hope for life and for others, even amid the seemingly God-forsaken despair of reality. He practices divine love, affirming: “God cares for them and I care for them.” In conclusion, The Martyred can be read as a work of Christian existentialist literature that reveals the presence of God engaging with human existence and history.
