This paper is a study of Luke 15, which contains three parables. Most papers study three parables individually, if not, study two or three together. However, this study focuses on the introduction in verses 1-2 and considers the entirety of chapter 15 along with the three parables.
A study on the theological meaning in Luke 15 reveals the importance of three theological themes: eschatology, soteriology, and implicit Christology. First, Jesus' table fellowship is described as an eschatological feast on each in the three parables. Therefore, it is revealed what the various pictorial languages of the progressively strengthened eschatological feast symbolize.
Second, participating in table fellowship has a soteriological character. The object of salvation is lost sinners, not those who claim to be righteous. It explains how sinners, portrayed as the lost sheep, coin, and son, are saved through a life of repentance and forgiveness.
Third, main characters of each of the three parables reflect Jesus' self-understanding that welcomes sinners and eats with them. Jesus presents himself as a faithful shepherd, a diligent woman, and a loving father. And he makes himself known as a man of merciful character who forgives sinners.
