FEW young teachers of grammar realize that all words are originally nouns. Certainly every verb is a noun, the name of one thought, abstract or concrete, with the added idea of doing. Thus do, meaning no particular form of action, is generic, embracing every form. Thus do (which becomes to in the Infinitive mood), may be used appositionally with any other verb. Fewer still understand how the same noun-verb acquires conflicting and even opposite meanings.
