"To procure a powerful ally, Lothaire married Emma, daughter of Lothaire, king of Italy, and of Adelaide of Burgundy, who was afterward wife of Othon, Emperor of Germany." This marriage was celebrated at Cologne, and like most marriages of convenience, it was unfortunate. In 986, Lothaire, the husband of Emma, was poisoned, and she was accused of the crime; this she denied, and as proof of her innocence, remarked that by Lothaire's death, she would lose her crown, and could therefore have no interest in committing the crime with which she was charged.
