Held at the Gwangju National Museum (GNM) from September 15th to December 10th, 2023, the special exhibition entitled Paintings Loved and Cherished was a resounding success, garnering the attention of both numerous media outlets and a large body of visitors. This special exhibition was held in commemoration of the GNM receiving the donation of Huh Ryun’s Eight-Fold Landscape Screen (Sansudopalpokbyeongpung) and Pine Trees Diptych (Sonamu daeryeon); Kim Jingyu’s Plum Blossom (Mukmae) [part of Seoknong’s Album of Paintings (Seoknonghwawon)]; and Shin Myeongyeon’s Portrait of Su Shi in a Bamboo Hat and Clogs (Dongpaipgeukdo), all of which come from the personal collection of the late Mr. Huh Minsu, a Jindo-born banker. Formerly in the safekeeping of Mr. Huh’s American daughter-in-law Mrs. Gail Ellis Huh, these collected pieces came back to Korea under a donation agreement thanks to the efforts of the Overseas Cultural Heritage Foundation and its U.S. office. Mrs. Huh’s donation was made out of respect for her father-in-law and love for her late husband Huh Gyeongmo, as well as her affection for the city of Jindo and Korean culture at large. Mrs. Huh’s decision rendered possible the repatriation of priceless cultural properties, bringing a great deal of joy to Korea and touching the hearts of many people. We are now charged with the responsibility of continuing to honor and remember Mrs. Huh’s gesture of kindness and good will
