도덕 실재론에 관한 일고찰 = An Examination of Moral Realism

국문 초록 (Abstract)

도덕 실재론과 반실재론 사이의 논쟁은 도덕철학의 역사에서 꽤 오래된 것이지만 여전히 현재 진행형인 미해결의 문제이다. 도덕 실재론의 핵심적 논점은 “객관적이고 참이며 독립적인 도덕원리와 도덕적 사실이 존재한다”는 것이다. 이러한 도덕 실재론은 반실재론의 비판에 대응하면서 크게 두 갈래―맥도웰(J. McDowell)과 플래츠(M. Platts)를 중심으로 한 영국의 실재론과 브링크(D. O. Brink)를 중심으로 한 미국의 실재론―으로 나뉘어 전개되고 있다. 맥도웰과 플래츠는 직관주의 도덕 실재론(intuitionist moral realism)의 부활을 시도하고 있다. 도덕 직관주의(moral intuitionism)는 20세기 말엽부터 새로운 부활을 체험하고 있다. 즉 최근의 도덕 직관주의는 오해에서 비롯된 여러 가지 비판들을 극복하고 다시금 신뢰를 회복하고 있다. 이러한 도덕 직관주의는 도덕 인식론에 있어서 상식적 접근법을 옹호한다. 본 연구의 목적은 최근 새롭게 부상하고 있는 현대 직관주의 도덕 실재론의 신뢰 가능성(reliability)을 확인하는 데 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The debate between moral realism and moral anti-realism is quite old in the history of moral philosophy, but it is still an ongoing and unresolved issue. The core argument of moral realism is the claim that “objective, true, and independent moral principles and moral facts exist”. In response to the criticism of anti-realism, moral realism is being developed into two major branches; British moral realism is developed around the work of John McDowell and Mark Platts, while American moral realism is developed around the work of D. O. Brink.
McDowell and Platts are attempting to revival of intuitonist moral realism. Moral intuitionism has been experiencing a new revival since the end of the 20th century. In other words, moral intuitionism has recently overcome various criticism arising from misunderstanding, and is regaining credibility. This new moral intuitionism advocates a common sense approach to moral epistemology. This study aims to confirm the reliability of modern intuitionist moral realism.
