문학과 문화 : 보상과 리더십의 관점에서 본 <김영철전> = Literature & Culture : Kim Youngchul-jeon from the reward and leadership perspective

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문에서 필자는 17세기 역사소설 <김영철전>을 주 텍스트로 하여 명-청 간 전쟁에 휘말린 한 개인의 인생과 정부의 리더십 문제를 비판적으로 고찰해 보았다. <김영철전>은 주인공 김영철이 1618년 부모와 이별한 후 심하전투에 출전, 전쟁포로가 되어 갖은 고생을 하다가 고국의 부모를 봉양하기 위해 필사적으로 귀향한 이야기, 그리고 그 귀향으로 인하여 김영철과 이국땅의 처자들이 서로 평생 한스러워하던 이야기, 김영철이 종군(從軍)으로 인하여 평생 고통스러워하던 이야기를 그린 역사소설이다. 이 작품을 통해서 우리는 김영철의 가족사의 시대적 배경이 되는 17세기 동아시아의 역사 현장 및 정치적 현실의 단면을 생생하게 만날 수 있다. 조선 정부는 심하전투 때 군사를 모으면서 징집자들에게 군역 면제를 비롯한 삼통(三通)을 약속하였지만, <김영철전>의 주인공 김영철은 어떠한 보상도 받지 못했고, 일생 동안 군역의 수고로움에서 벗어날 수 없었다. 조선정부는 심하전투 때 결사항전하다가 전사한 김응하 장군에 대해서는 즉각적으로 <충렬록>에 이름을 올려 영웅화하여 숭명반청 이데올로기를 선양하였다. 하지만 전공자(戰功者), 전상자(戰傷者), 전사자(戰死者), 포로(捕虜)된 자들에 대해서 어떠한 보상도 하지 못했고, 그러한 돈이나 정책도 준비하지 못했다. 이에 비해 소설 속의 청 태종 홍타이지(皇太極)는 위기에 처한 김영철을 천하를 얻을 징조라며, 영철이 전에 지은 과오를 용서하고, 비단과 말 두 마리라는 큰 상을 내렸다. 역사적으로 청 정부는 포로들을 팔기군으로 편입하고, 항장들을 비롯하여 이민족 출신자들을 우대하여 건국에 큰 공을 세우게 했고, 그들에게 합당한 보상을 하였다. 청정부는 이러한 정책과 보상의 리더십을 통해 천하를 통일하였고, 조선정부는 파병 군인에 대한 보상을 하지 못함으로써 국정의 토대를 잃었다. 1만여 군인들이 목숨을 잃거나 귀환하지 못함으로써 조선의 국 력은 크게 손상되었고, 1만여 가정에서는 생계를 잇고 가문 이을 남자를 잃었다. <김영철전>은 전시의 상황에서 무능한 국가와 천하를 통일할 국가의 리더십이 어떠한 것인가를 대비적으로 보여준다. 필자는 텍스트 분석을 통하여 위정자들이 공허한 이데올로기에 빠지지 않고 국제정세를 잘 살펴 국가의 실리를 챙겨야 함과, 개인의 삶을 보호하고 공적에 대한 합당한 보상이 필요함을 제기하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Writer, by making 17c historical novel Kim Young Chul-joen the main text, considered one person’s life who was involved in Ming-Qing war and the government leadership problem in this paper. Kim Youngchul-jeon is a historical novel that main character Kim Youngchul separated with family, participated in Simha Battle, suffered from being war prisoner and returned to the country, followed the army again and get suffered. Through this work, we can meet historical event and aspect of real politics of 17c East Asia that provide a period background of Kim Youngchul family history. Recruiting the army for Simha Battle, Chosun government promised the exemption of military service and people of lower class. However, main character Kim Youngchul didn’t receive any rewards, and couldn’t get out of laborious tasks for the lifetime. Chosun government enhanced the ideology that revere Ming and against Qing by registering General Kim Eungha who died in Simha Battle on Chungryeol-rok promptly and heroizing him. However, the government couldn’t give any reward to people who honored, wounded, died, and prisoned during the war and couldn’t prepare any money or law neither. In contrast, emperor of Qing, Hong Taiji in the novel forgave Youngchul’s mistake in the past and gave a silk and two horses. Historically, Qing government admitted war prisoners to Eight Banners(八旗軍), deserved foreign people well including surrendered generals, made them give a big contributions, and gave proper rewards. Qing government unified the China with these laws and leadership of rewards, however, Chosun government lost the foundation of government affair by not giving a reward to dispatching soldiers. About ten thousand soldiers died or couldn’t return to Chosun, Chosun national power critically damaged and those families lost men who inherit the family. Kim Youngchul-jeon shows incapable nation in the war and what is the leadership of nation who unify the world. Writer brought up the need to take a benefit of the nation, with politicians do not fall in empty ideology and look closely at international situation, and the need to protect personal lives and give proper reward about accomplishment.
