음악 문헌을 통해 본 조선 후기 종묘악장의 추이 = A Study on the Change of Jongmyo Akjang in the Late Joseon Period through Music Literature

국문 초록 (Abstract)

宗廟樂章은 종묘 제향 때 樂人이 부르는 노래이다. 악장을 매개로 神과 感通할 수 있다고 여겼기에, 왕실에서 이를 중요시했다. 그러나 임란 후 종묘악장은 극심한 혼란에 휩싸였다. 첨입된 텍스트와 연주 현장의 열악함 때문이었다. 이러한 상황은 인조가 중광장을 첨입했던 사건과 전쟁의 후유증으로 인해 악기가 소실되고 악인이 흩어졌던 당대의 현실에 기반한다. 국왕과 신료들은 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 지속적으로 노력했고, 그 일환으로 문헌을 편찬했다. 이러한 서적들은 관료나 악인들이 참고하고 때로는 상용할 수 있었다. 대표적인 책들이 숙종대의 『악원고사』 • 『종묘의궤』 • 『악장가사』, 영조대의 『대악후보』 • 『국조악장』, 정조대의 『종묘악장』 • 『국조시악』이었다. 이를 통해 종묘악장을 정리해 나가던 시기별 특징과 추이를 가늠해 보았다. 즉, 혼잡했던 중광장의 현실과 악인 교육을 위해 노력하던 상황, 정리된 중광장을 공시했단 용단성, 악장 전문 책자의 중요성을 인지시킴과 동시에 아속악으로 형성된 종묘악장 역사의 전체상을 드러낸 안목을 확인할 수 있었다. 당대인들의 고민과 해법이 구체화 된 음악 문헌에는 국왕과 신료들의 고뇌, 지혜, 통찰이 담겨 있었다. 이들의 노력은 종묘악장이 현재까지 존속할 수 있는 저력의 근간이 되었다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Jongmyo Akjang is a song performed by musicians during the ritual at Jongmyo (the Royal Ancestral Shrine). In Eastern tradition, music was seen as a conduit for communication with gods and spirits. This belief was deeply ingrained in the practices at Jongmyo, where Akjang was considered a means of connecting with the ancestral deities of the royal lineage. As a result, successive kings held great reverence for Akjang, considering it an indispensable component of the Jongmyo ritual. Following the Imjin War, Jongmyo Akjang faced a period of crisis attributed to additional textual elements and poor condition of performance venues. Despite these challenges, both the kings and their subjects persisted in finding solutions, compiling texts to preserve the tradition. Through the musical literature of late Joseon, we can gain insight into the distinctive features and evolving trends of Jongmyo Akjang over time. These texts offer a tangible record of the concerns and remedies sought by those striving to navigate through the crisis.
The musical materials examined in this study are as follows: Akwon Gosa, Jongmyo Uigwe, Akjang Gasa in the reign of King Sukjong; Daeak Hubo, Gukjo Akjang in the reign of King Yeongjo; and Jongmyo Akjang, Gukjo Siak in the reign of King Jeongjo. Through these sources, insights were gained into various aspects: the perplexity arising from the introduction of a new song, Junggwang (重光); the contemporary circumstances prompting the creation of an instructional booklet for Akjang transmission; the strategic organization of Junggwang by King Yeongjo; and the discerning historical summation of Jongmyo Akjang by King Jeongjo. It is evident that their collective endeavors laid the groundwork for the enduring legacy of Jongmyo Akjang.
