This study was carried out to investigate the experience of menstrual symptoms for the premenstrual and menstrual phase, and interrelations between the menstrual cycle symptoms and the characteristics of students.
A total of 520 high school and college students in Chonju city wrote out the self evaluated symptoms using Moos' menstrual distress questionnaire (MDQ) during the period from 23rd to 29th of September, 1990.
The results of this survey were as follows:
      I. Characteristics related to menstruation
      1. The mean age of subjects and menarche were 18.7 and 13.8 years old separately.
      2. The menstrual cycle was regular in 60.4 % and the mean duration of it was 28.9 days. The mean duration of the menstrual flow was 4.95 days. Amount of menstrual flow showed medium in 69.2 %.
      3. Most of respondents (78.8 %) complained the restrict of activity due to menstruation.
      4. In respondents' attitude about menstruation, negative response (37.5 %) showed higher than positive response (18.7 %).
      5. Psychological response about their menarche showed pleasurable in 10.6 % and unpleasurable in 82.3 %.
      6. Respondents who had knowledge about menstruation before their menarche were reported by 33.1 %.
II. Experience of menstrual symptoms for phases.
      1. Characteristic symptoms which showed higher frequency and mean score were as follows: In premenstrual phase, backache, lower abdominal pain, irritability, fatigue, anxiety, stay at home and mood swings. In menstrual phase, lower abdominal pain, backache, irritability, fatigue, stay at home, lowered motor coordination and decreased efficiency.
      2. The menstrual distress of all MDQ symptoms was severer during the menstrual phase (Mean 2.190) than during the premenstrual phase (Mean 1.887). The difference of the MDQ symptom scores between the two phases was statistically significant (T= -21.10, P < 0.000). Symptom group which showed higher mean score than 2.000 among 8 'group of menstrual symptoms were as follows: In premenstrual phase, pain, behavioral change and negative affect. In menstrual phase, pain, concentration, behavioral change, autonomic reaction and negative affect.
III. Interrelation between menstrual cycle symptoms and characteristics of subjects
      1. Following factors toward menstrual cycle symptoms in two phases, premenstrual phase (PM) and menstrual phase (M), were statistically significant: age (r= .1920, P < 0.000 in PM and r= .1457, P < 0.000 in M), health status (F= 9.646, P < 0.000 in PM and F= 10.761, P < 0.000 in M), duration of menstrual flow (r= .1136, P < 0.005 in PM and r= .0895, P < 0.05 in M), amount of menstrual flow (F= 5.083, P < 0.01 in PM and F= 5.385, P < 0.005 in M), restrict of activity (F= 25.879, P < 0.000 in PM and F= 64,940, P < 0.000 in M).
      2. Attitude about menstruation was statistically significant in only menstrual phase (F= 4.587, P < 0.01).
