By examining the case of B Pharmaceuticat Company which has adopted information technology, this study aims to provide those domestic pharmaceutical companies which are either willing or not to use it with some data for decisionmaking.
The importance of information technology in this age of information com be realized when an enterprise needs to impove its management system, affairn managerial information, and deal with effectively such changeds as the rise of personnel and transportation expenses and the shift of managerial surroundings.
When the enterprise becomes information-minded, there are both positive and negative sides. Positive aspects include direct effects, including business efficiency, productivity rise, rational business, and the improvement in the decisionmaking process and aftersales service, and indirect effects, such as the bettered way of thinking, natural PR activities, standardization and managerial reform
On the other hand, there might be some negative aspects: the problem of employment following the progress of OA, gaps among the enterprises, the promotion of monoploy, the phenomenon of human alienation, the loss of ethics, the security system of computers, and the protection of privacy.
Here, the researcher made use of the concept of business reengineering used by Michael Hammer, implying the "managerial renovation by way of information technology." Its characteristics are basic, elementary, epochmaking, and process-centered.
Accordingly, two companies (B and H) were chosen for an analysis In five respects: 1) what problems in the management system caused new information technology 2) how much improvement was made in business efficiency and the decisionmaking process 3) whether negative effects followed 4) whether the viewpoint of business reengineering could be found in the course of adopting information technology 5) whether new technology was the prinicipal reason for the different business achievements of the two companies.
As a result the following conclusions were made: Even though some positive effects stopd out, negative ones were hard to see, partly because of the short interval after the introduction of information technology. The matter of business reegineering is not clear as the whole business merely turned computer-oriented.
Thus, in the case of B Pharmaceutical Company, more radical and fundamental business reengineering efforts are required. Lashy, B's better sales record was mostly attributable to the efficient business style of using notebook computers.
