Rollo May의 관점에서 Francis Bacon의 회화에 나타난 불안에 대한 연구 = A Study on the Anxiety in Francis Bacon’s Paintings from Perspective of Rollo May

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 Rollo May의 이론을 바탕으로 Francis Bacon의 삶과 심리적 특성을 살펴보고 창조적 활동의 일환인 작품 활동과 작품에서 드러난 심상을 탐구하는 데에 목적을 두었다. 한 점의 회화가 탁월한 걸작으로 찬미되는 이유는 단순하게 실재에 가깝게 재현해내는 기술적인 측면이라기보다 화가의 내면에서 울리는 환상이 회화를 통해 표출되는 심상적인 측면 때문이다. 회화에 나타난 심상은 화가의 내면을 이해하는 중요한 기반이 된다. 이에 본 연구는 20세기 최고의 현대미술가로 평가되는 Francis Bacon을 연구주제로 삼고 생애를 통해 불안의 형성과정과 회화적 배경을 살펴보았다. 또한 불안을 해소하기 위해 창조성을 강조한 Rollo May의 이론을 분석지표로 삼고 Francis Bacon의 회화에 나타난 불안 이미지를 이해하고자 했다.
Francis Bacon의 회화에 가장 큰 특징은 인간과 동물의 형상이라 볼 수 없는 기괴한 형상, 인간의 모습이지만 고통스러운 표정으로 인한 암울한 분위기, 초상화 속 인물을 일그러트리고 왜곡시킨 얼굴이다. 이러한 특징을 통해 Francis Bacon은 자신 내면과 시대적 통찰을 회화에 부여하여 불안을 표출하였다. 부모님의 강압적이고 무관심한 양육태도, 동성애, 연인들의 죽음, 두 차례의 세계대전을 경험하면서 평생 불안에 사로잡혔던 Francis Bacon이 화가의 길에 들어서 작품 활동을 이어간 점은 미술의 치유적인 관점으로 이해될 수 있다. 이렇듯 본 연구에서 Francis Bacon을 화가, 그 이상을 넘어서 인간으로서의 삶과 내면을 탐구하였다. 회화에 나타난 심상이 어떤 형태로 표출되었는지를 통해 Francis Bacon의 작품을 다각적으로 고찰해볼 수 있는 기회를 마련하는 데에 의의를 두었다. 나아가 미술의 치유적인 관점을 더해짐에 따른 작품의 깊이 있는 이해에 도움이 되기를 기대한다.

This study aims to examine the life and psychological characteristics of Francis Bacon from the theoretical perspective of Rollo May and explore the painter’s works as part of creative activities and imagery in his works. A painting is praised as a masterpiece not simply because of its technique of realistic depiction but because of its imagery that expresses the artist’s inner imagination. Imagery serves as an important source to understand the artist’s inner world. In this context, this study examines Francis Bacon, who is considered one of the greatest contemporary artists of the 20th century, and how his anxiety was formed over the course of his life along with the background of his paintings. Furthermore, this study used the theory of Rollo May, who highlights creativity to address anxiety, as a basis for analysis to understand the imagery of anxiety in Francis Bacon’s painting. Some of the most notable features of Francis Bacon’s paintings include disturbing figures that are hardly recognized as humans or animals, a bleak atmosphere created by humans with painful expressions, and contorted and distorted faces in portraits. Using these features, Francis Bacon expressed his anxiety by encapsulating insights from his own life and time period in his paintings. Francis Bacon, who was beset by anxiety throughout his life, caused by his parents’ oppressive and indifferent upbringing, his homosexuality, his lovers’ deaths, and two world wars, can be understood from the perspective of art as therapy. Thus, this study explores the life and inner world of Francis Bacon as a human being, not as a painter alone. This study is significant as it provides an opportunity to review Francis Bacon’s paintings from different angles by examining how imagery was expressed in his paintings. Moreover, adding the perspective of art as therapy is expected to deepen the understanding of artistic works.
