다문화 시대, 비판적 미디어 리터러시의 교육적 함의에 대해 = Educational implications of critical media literacy in the multicultural era

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 새로운 소통의 도구로서 미디어의 중요성에 주목하며 비판적 미디어 리터러시(Critical media literacy: CML)와 소수자에 대한 국내외 연구 분석을 통해 CML교육을 디지털 미디어 시대에 적합한 다문화교육의 한 대안으로 제시하고자 한다. 구체적인 연구 질문은 다음과 같다. 첫째, CML은 무엇이며 학교문해 교육에서 어떠한 의미를 가지는가? 둘째, 한국 다문화교육에서 미디어의 역할과 의미는 무엇인가? 셋째, 한국 다문화교육에서 비판적 CML교육이 가진 잠재력은 어떠한가? 본 논문에서는 먼저 미디어의 분석, 생산, 기술에 각각 중점을 둔 다양한 유형의 미디어 교육 접근법을 소개하고, 학교 안과 밖을 연결하는 미디어의 역할을 강조하면서 CML의 특성과 교수방법을 논의하였다. 그리고 한국사회에서 미디어를 통한 소수자 재현방식의 문제점, 미디어 교육의 비활성화, 미디어 관련 연구의 성과와 방향성의 문제 등을 짚어 보았다. 끝으로, 창조와 변혁의 주체로서 소수자를 재정의하고 CML의 경계 해체적 특징에 주목하며, CML 기반 다문화 교육은 기존 주류 미디어에 재현된 소수자에 대한 담론을 해체할 뿐 아니라 선주민과 이주민 모두의 다문화적 역량을 강화할 수 있음을 강조한다. 향후 CML기반 다문화 교육을 위한 제언과 다양한 후속 연구의 가능성을 제안하며 논문을 끝맺는다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

For students living in the 21st century, media is one of the most powerful means for learning and communication. This study explores the educational potentials of critical media literacy (CML) for multicultural education in South Korea. The present study first introduces and compares different approaches to media education (i.e., protectionist approach, media arts education, media education movement, and CML), and then discusses the relationship between CML and school literacy focusing on the participatory culture and criticality of media literacy. Next, it examines the representational modes of minorities in Korean media to show that media often contributes to reproduction of stereotypes and assimilative discourses on minorities including multicultural families. Finally, the paper closely discusses the possibilities of CML as a transformative power highlighting that minorities are becoming new selves, as well as changing others in this post-modern era. In sum, CML-based multicultural education is believed to create a space wherein static discourses and stereotyped images of minorities represented in the mainstream media are critically analyzed and deconstructed, and multicultural competencies for both immigrants and local residents are cultivated and further enhanced.
