      Productivity at container terminals is often measured by ship turnaround time, a time period for which a container ship stays at a dock for its loading or discharging operations. In most container terminals, quay cranes are a bottleneck resource that determines the ship turnaround time. Existing studies on quay cranes mainly focus on efficient use of a single‐trolley quay crane which is commonly seen in today's container terminals. However, technology advances make it possible to use different types of quay cranes such as dual‐trolley and buffered quay crane systems. This paper examines the performance of the new types of quay crane systems. Operational data have been gathered from a real‐world container terminal. A Petrinet model is used to represent the cooperative works of various handling systems. Through the simulation experiments, the new types of the quay crane systems are compared with the traditional quay crane system.
