연극코러스의 기능과 분장에 관한 고찰

국문 초록 (Abstract)

연극은 모든 예술장르가 적절히 조화를 이루는 표현예술장르의 기본이라고 할 수 있다. 또한 현대인들에게 문화 욕구를 충족시켜주는 분야이다. 연극에서 코러스는 중요한 역할을 한다. 이에 이 연구는 코러스의 기능과 분장의 변화된 형태를 살펴보고자 한다.
고대 그리스 연극에서 코러스는 중요한 역할을 한다. 고대 그리스 시대의 극장을 살펴보면 지붕이 없는 야외무대이며 수백 · 수천 명을 수용하는 커다란 극장이다. 이러한 극장구조상 관객에게 줄거리는 물론 대사전달이 힘들었다. 그래서 코러스의 역할이 더 중요하였다. 코러스는 대사뿐만 아니라 노래와 춤을 포함하여 시각적으로 작품을 전달 · 이해 할수 있도록 하였다. 고대 그리스 연극에서 코러스는 특정한 성격을 가진 등장인물 그리고 해설자로 등장하게 된다.
그러나 고대 그리스 연극이후 코러스는 시대에 따라 변화하여 연극에 따라 역할을 달리하게 된다.
그리스 시대의 연극부터 20세기 연극까지는 시간적으로 약 2500년이라는 큰 차이가 있다. 시간의 흐름에 따라 연극 역시도 변화를 겪을 수밖에 없었다. 더불어 연극의 중요한 구성원인 코러스 역시도 변하지 않을 수 없었다.
그러나 코러스는 시대를 망론하고 극중인물로서 관객과 배우의 거리를 좁히는 역할을 하였으며 작가를 대변하여 관객에게 작가의 의도를 이해하게 도와주는 역할을 하였다. 또한 연극의 형식과 형태 그리고 의상과 분장은 변화하였지만 코러스의 기능은 중첩됨을 알 수 있었다. 그러므로 코러스는 연극의 다양성을 위해 그리고, 여러 연극의 형식들을 충족시키기 위해 앞으로도 더욱 발전시키고 향상된 기술로써 보여져야하는 요소라고 할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The play is the basis of expressive art, in which every art genres are harmonized. It is also a field that satisfies the cultural desire of modern people. This paper examines the function of the chorus and the changed form of makeup in plays. The chorus plays an important role in ancient Greek plays. Ancient Greek theaters had open-air stages with no roof and were large enough to contain hundreds and thousands of people. The large structure of theaters made it hard to deliver lines and summaries to the audience. Thus, the role of the chorus was important. The chorus not only included dialogues but also included songs and dances that visually delivered and helped the understanding of works. In ancient Greek plays, the chorus appears as a character with a particular personality and also as a narrator. However, after ancient Greek plays, the chorus changed and played different roles according to the play. About 2,500-year passed from the ancient Greek plays to the 20th-century plays. As time went by, social environment and economic conditions also changed, and plays were not an exception. Moreover, since the chorus is a crucial component of plays, the chorus also went through changes. However, regardless of changes in time, the chorus still plays a role in narrowing the distance between the audience and the actors, which helps the audience to understand the intention of the author. Furthermore, while the forms of play, costume and makeup have changed over time, the function of the chorus is still identical in many plays. Therefore, for the sake of diversity among theaters and to meet the different forms of various plays, the chorus must be developed further and must show improved techniques.
