브렌타노 지향성 이념의 해석 문제 = The Problem of Interpreting Brentano’s Idea of Intentionality : A Critique of Bartok’s View

국문 초록 (Abstract)

프란츠 브렌타노의 지향성 이념에 대한 두 상이한 해석이 있어 왔다. 치즘이 대표하는 분석적 해석과 후설 전통의 현상학적 이해가 그것이다. 그 두 해석을 적절하게 이해하는 일은 쉽지 않다. 이와 같은 배경에서 비교적 최근에 필립 바톡은 브렌타노의 지향성 이념에 대한 명료한 해명을 제시한다. 나아가 그는 브렌타노 지향성 이념을 심리학의 방법론적 원리로 이해하는 현상학적 시각이 올바른 노선에 있으므로 이른바 형이상학적이고 철학적인 해석에 기우는 분석적 접근은 현상학적 처치에 의하여 보완되어야 한다고 주장한다.
이 논문의 목적은 브렌타노의 지향성 이념을 보다 더 적확하고 올바르게 이해하기 위하여 바톡의 견해를 비판적으로 논구하는 것이다. 여기에서 필자는, 브렌타노의 지향성 이념에 대한 바톡의 해명이 분명히 의미심장하고 중요하지만 그럼에도 그의 입장은 브렌타노 지향성 이념에 대한 분석적 해석과 현상학적 해석 양자를 보다 더 근원적으로 통합할 수 있는 적절한 장치-즉 지향성이 관련하는 철학 일반의 이념과 목적과 방법에 대한 주의 깊은 고려-를 갖출 필요가 있다는 결론에 도달한다. 필자는 이 관점이 브렌타노의 참 모습을 더 잘 드러낼 수 있다고 생각한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

There have been two distinct approaches to Franz Brentano’s idea of intentionality: Chisholm’s analytical interpretation and the Husserlean phenomenological interpretation. It is not easy to understand both expositions in a proper manner. Under this circumstances, Philip Bartock has recently provided us with a lucid account of Brentano’s notion of intentionality. Furthermore he makes a remarkable claim that since the phenomenological approach in which Brentano’s idea of intentionality is understood as a methodological principle of doing an adequate psychology is generally on the right track, the analytical interpretation in which a metaphysical understanding about the intentionality of the mind is emphasized should be supplemented by the very phenomenological treatment.
The present paper aims to make a thorough, critical investigation into Bartock’s claim aforementioned, mainly for the purpose of reaching a more proper and right understanding of Brentano’s notion of intentionality. In doing so, the author of this paper draws the conclusion that although Bartock’s exposition and claim about Brentano’s idea of intentionality could be significant, it still needs to be equipped with an appropriate philosophical apparatus that can fundamentally unite both the analytical and the phenomenological interpretations of the Brentanian notion of intentionality. Here the apparatus in question is obtained by making some careful considerations of the idea, purpose, and method of philosophy itself. The author of this paper takes it that this view sheds more light on understanding Brentano.
