장소로서의 몸과 비환원적 물질성

국문 초록 (Abstract)

여성주의 연구들은 20세기 후반에 이분법을 넘어서 몸을 다시 이론화하고 재고하는 데 많은 에너지를 투입해 왔다. 보부아르가 제시한 바 있듯이 여성은 몸과 마음, 자연과 문화의 이분법적이고 위계적인 사고방식 안에서 몸이자 자연으로 규정되었고 따라서 열등한 것으로 취급되어왔기 때문이다. 따라서 이제 무엇보다도 중요한 것은 여성의 몸을 만회하고 재현할 수 있는 육체성 개념을 페미니즘의 관점에서 재정립하는 것이다. 이에 필자는 본 논문에서 몸을 사회적 관계들과 물질적 과정들이 교차하는 어느 정도 단단한 그러나 유동적인 “장소(place)”로 볼 것을 제안하고자 한다. 몸에 대한 공간적 접근은 이미 몸을 사회적 관계를 각인하고 있는 “표면”으로 상정하고 있는 푸코 논의 속에서 잘 나타난다. 그러나 푸코는 몸을 법/제도/담론의 효과로 환원하는 가운데 사회적인 관계에 반응하고 저항하는 몸의 물질적 “힘”이 어떻게 가능한지를 설명하지 않았다. 이와 달리 엘리자베스 그로츠는 몸을 뫼비우스의 띠에 비유하면서 사회적 관계나 의미작용의 결과이면서도 이것들로 환원되지 않는 물질성의 심급을 설명한다. 뿐만 아니라 그로츠는 몸이 다층적인 사회관계들이 중첩되고 상호 교차하는 개별적인 위치임을 분명히 함으로써 몸이 어떻게 자신과 사회관계들을 생산적으로 변화하는가를 설명한다. 그로츠는 몸을 다양한 차원의 물질성과 사회적 관계들이 상호침투하는 지점으로 파악함으로써 이분법과 일원론 모두를 극복하고자 하는 것이다. 나아가 필자는 몸의 비환원적 물질성과 개별적 위치성 그리고 다양한 관계들 속에서의 유동성을 체계적으로 설명하기 위해서는 몸을 “장소”로 개념화하는 것이 유용함을 주장하고자 한다. 몸을 “장소”로 개념화한다는 것은 몸의 비환원적 물질성을 인정한다는 것이며 몸을 여러 스케일의 다층적 사회관계들이 중첩되는 개별적 위치로 파악하는 것이다. 뿐만 아니라 이러한 개념화에 따르면 몸은 각기 다른 스케일의 장소들과의 관계 속에서 다양한 방식으로 현현되고 변화하는 지점으로 인식될 수 있다. 이렇게 몸을 장소로 이해할 때 여성주의자들은 몸을 자발적인 물질성을 갖는 것으로 이해할 수 있으며 이를 토대로 여성을 수동적 물질성으로 정의하고 이성 혹은 정신의 지배하에 두려했던 이분법적 사고방식을 비판할 수 있게 된다. 이제 여성의 몸은 생물학적인 것과 사회적인 것의 접면이자 교차지점이기에 더 이상 수동적이거나 고정적인 물질이 아니며 오히려 자발적이고 유동적이며 생산적인 상호작용의 힘으로 이해될 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Feminist scholarship has been particularly influential in rethinking and retheorizing the body in the late twentieth century. The decontruction of centrality of the opposition between the mind and the body established in Enlightenment thought has been a key element of this work. Recently the most important thing is to suggest a non-binary concept of corporeality from a feminist perspective. So, in this paper I'll suggest to rethink the body as a "place" in which the irreducible materiality and the sets of social relationships are intersecting. The spatial approach to the body can be seen in the Foucault's works. In oder to overcome the dichotomy He theorized the body as a surface to be inscribed by social practices, suggesting that bodies are acted upon in discursively constructed institutional settings. But he seems to suggest that there are bodies and pleasures that exist outside of power/knowledge discourses, without specifying what these are or their origins. In contrast Elisabeth Grosz introduce the metaphor "Mobius strip" to explain a range of voluntary practices of the body. According to Grosz the body provides a point of mediation between what is perceived as purely internal and accessible only to the subject and what is external and publicly observable. And in process of the explanation of what is internal, she premises the dimension of the irreducible materiality such as th sexual drive or the biological process. But it is not a fixed or passive substance outside the signifying processes, but an open materiality which can be founded and developed in and with them. In addition Grosz argues that the body can provide a unique position, on which the multiple social relations interlock and intersect. Finally I'd like to argue that the body needs to be conceptualized as a "place" to explain the irreducible materiality, the unique position and the mutuality of the variety of social relations of body more coherently. To conceptualize the body as a "place" means to acknowledge the irreducible materiality of the body, to regard it as a unoque combination of the multiple social relations and to recognize that the body is differently represented in relation to what scale of place it is located in. When feminist scholarship receives this concept of the body, they also can reach the feminist concept of the voluntary body that overcomes the binary concept of the body.
